Chapter 13
Jack and Sally were loitering under a bridge in a woody part of town. ``If Oogie comes this way, we finish him off right here.'' This was Jack's plan. A few bugs seemed to swarm around the bridge. ``I guess he's near.'' Jack backed into the shadows, concealing himself. He was right. Oogie and his kids were strolling along toward the bridge. He suddenly stopped and raised an eyebrow. ``Hmmmm…I feel there's something not quite right here.'' He picked up Barrel by the neck. ``You! Go check it out!'' Barrel yipped as he was chucked to the underside of the bridge. He landed with a loud thud. ``Ugghh, that stupid Oogie. Why's he boss me around like that?'' Jack's hand quickly covered his mouth. ``Shh, Barrel, it's me Jack.'' ``J-Jack? What're you doing here?'' ``Same way you got here. I couldn't help but overhear you're not very satisfied with your time with Oogie, eh?'' ``Yeah, I guess.'' ``We'll get him. Don't you worry, but there's one thing I need you to do…'' Back at the top, Oogie waited for Barrel to confirm the safety. Barrel ran up to the other side. ``Coast is clear boss!'' he yelled. ``Good.'' Oogie walked halkfway across the bridge as Jack squatted, ready for action. One last step and Jack Leapt up high onto the bridge. ``Waah! Jack!'' ``Hello Oogie.'' Sally and Zero climbed their way up top. ``Barrel! You double-crosser!'' ``Nyah nyah!'' Barrel smacked his butt and taunted Oogie. Jack stood there and grinned. Oogie replied to his look. ``You think you've got me? Hah! I haven't even begun to fight!'' A rush of energy left Oogie, following a swarm of insects. ``Bugs? You're gonna fight me with bugs?'' Jack laughed. One of the bugs came down and whisked against Jack's face. ``Ow! Hey what the heck?!'' ``Ho ho ho ho! You see? With your flesh and blood, your body and feelings are much more vulnerable. But when I summon a mass of bugs, you'll be consumed and turned to a pile of lifeless meat.'' Jack, Sally and Zero waved their hands at the bugs as they bit and stung. ``Ugh, this sucks. But you have your powers…I must have mine!'' Jack stood up and spread his arms apart. Suddenly, white puffs appeared and formed into ghosts. It was a swarm of ghosts against a swarm of bugs. The ghosts easily won, absorbing the bugs into their prison like bodies. The ghosts disappeared as Oogie stared in horror. Jack chuckled. ``Heh, you see? You can't beat me. I am the Pumpkin King.'' Oogie's eyes narrowed hatefully at Jack. All of a sudden, the sky began to darken. The wind picked up. ``Jack, what are you doing?!'' Oogie called out, feeling the wind almost blow him away. ``I-it's not me! I'm not doing this!'' Half the bridge began to fall apart, dropping them all underneath it. Jack suddenly felt vines crawl up his legs. He jumped back, throwing the vines off. ``What is this!'' The wind died down and the ground began to glow. Pumpkins sprouted randomly. ``Who's doing this!'' Jack called out, hoping for an answer. He looked down at the ground. In the dirt was a picture of a coil, what looked like the mountain in Halloween Town. Words were slowly being scraped over it. ``S-A-M-H-A-I-N…S-samhain?!'' Jack's eyes filled with anger and confusion. An eerie chuckle filled the forest. Samhain appeared in a rush if wind. ``Did you call me Jack?'' he grinned. ``Damn you! You've been planning something this whole time!'' ``Why, yes, you finally figured it out. See, I was the rightful ruler to our world until you came along. You ruined it all. But now that you're mortal, I can kill you now and take my place back as the true Pumpkin King!'' Sally stared in shock. ``No, you can't!'' ``Yes, dear, I can. And when I'm done with your precious hubby, I'll be in control of this entire world!''
