All The Little Things – Chapter 6
Sid opened and closed her fists nervously as she stared at Zim. “You’re joking…right?” she asked grasping for hope.
Zim just sighed. “I assure you, I’m quite serious!”
Sid ran a hand through her black hair. But it wasn’t so black anymore. From the hair-roots there were hints of deep red, as in her tips. She sighed again. “So you want me to….steal from Dib…right?”
He nodded and turned away from her and walked up to a small monitor. He turned it on, and you could see Dib standing right outside the front door, tapping with his foot on the ground impatiently.
Zim pushed away the monitor, and it disappeared somewhere inside the wall.
“If I know Dib right, he’s going to try and break inside any minute now, if you don’t get back up there.” He said and eyed her. “Have you understood your first job for me?”
Sid nodded and sighed. “Yes, yes. Lure Dib to tell me where he keeps all his evidence against you, then steal them…” she repeated. “But I honestly don’t think I’ll…” she started but Zim cut her off by pushing her in front of him back to the elevator. “Of COURSE you will!”
Sid knew better than to argue, and just looked up at him with a tired expression.
Zim waved with the little remote in front of her face, before he pressed the elevator button. “Don’t disappoint me.” was his only words before she started to go up.
Stepping back into the living room, felt heavier than ever. Telling Dib about everything wouldn’t work. Then she suspected that Zim would find out pretty soon, and then kill her with a click on a button. Helping Zim would be even worse. Sighing she decided to keep to her plan in doing what she was told, but….still try and slow him down. Not so he notices of course….but…you know. “He doesn’t seem to be that bright anyway…” was her last thought before opening the door. While doing so, she took a surprised step back when Dib fell down at her feet. He had obviously trying to break in. He quickly stood up and brushed himself off.
“Hmm…sorry… are you okay? What took you so long? Where’s Zim?” he asked, all in one breath.
Sid blinked. ”Uh…yes I am, I couldn’t find it and I don’t know.” She answered him and tried to block him from entering the house. ”So….let’s go?” she said with a nervous look. Dib blinked once and looked at her.
“Huh? Yea...okay let’s go. I don’t think this house is very…. I’LL BE BACK ZIM!!” he shouted right before Sid slammed the door shut.
They walked out and down the street in silence. Sid was so anxious she didn’t know what to say or do. After a short while, she noticed that Dib was eyeing her from the side. “What were you DOING in there anyway?” he asked.
Sid, who tried her best to remember what her last answer to that question was, took a long pause before she said anything. This made him raise one eyebrow.
“Well…I’ve already told you.” She said.
“Refresh my memory.”
“I….work there. I clean his house…and stuff…”
He nodded. “Oh….oh yea…I remember…”
There was another awkward silence before Dib let out a sigh.
“Well…we’re here!” he said with a gesture to the house.
Sid looked up with a surprised look.
“But… this is MY house…”
“….um….yes?”
“But…..but… but I thought….”
Sid blushed furiously. ‘Of course! Why would she get the idea of Dib bringing her to HIS house? He asked her to come with him yes. He wanted to take her home. Nngh, how stupid can you get?’ She thought, blaming herself.
Dib narrowed his eyes slightly. “Is something wrong?”
She turned to him, shook her head a few times too many and tried to breath normally.
“Um…I just remembered that my dad is not home, and I don’t have a key.” She lied and gave him something, which she hoped would look like an innocent smile.
It probably worked, because he returned it. Oh Well…. with a confused and a slightly suspicious one, but still a smile. “Well…in that case… I guess you could….” He started but Sid cut him off. “Stay at your place? Oh thank you!” she shouted in delight and began to walk away from her own house before her dad would see her from the window or something and start shouting after her. Dib just shrugged and followed. “Okay…”
Seeing Dib’s house for the first time gave her an extra heartbeat of hope. It looked so….scientific. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to tell him after all? Dib stopped by the front door and turned to face her. “Would you mind waiting here for just a minute?”
Sid narrowed her eyes. “Okay…but…”
“Just one second!” Dib grinned and ran inside, slamming the door shut in her face. She blinked surprised and waited. After maybe two minutes the door opened again.
Dib smiled widely at her with his hands behind his back. A look that made her unconsciously take two steps backwards. She shifted her eyes. “Um…something wrong?” she asked, a bit worried by his sudden sly grin.
“No nothing.” He said and took another step after her.
Sid glanced behind her back nervously. Dib tilted his head. “What are you scared of?”
She looked back at him, just in time to see him raise something over his head. And with a loud yell he drained her in water.
There was a short, short moment of complete silence. Then Sid let out a small scream. “What the HELL was that for you jerk?” she yelled at him, spitting and coughing. Dib just stared at her with big eyes and in loss for words.
“I….um….wow…I’m really sorry. I just thought…..”
“Thought what?” She asked angrily as she tried to squeeze all the water from her hair.
“Nevermind!” he said and honestly looked like he was feeling bad. He gestured for her to come inside, which she did, after a small hesitation.
They came in to a bigger living room, with the biggest TV she had ever seen. On the couch sat a girl, playing on a game. She was almost the same height as Sid. Dib gestured to the girl. “Um… this is my sister Gaz. Gaz? This is a friend from Skool…”
The girl he called Gaz looked up for a short moment and raised one eyebrow at her. “I suppose you know what you’re doing huh?” she asked Sid with a raspy voice. Sid wasn’t sure what she meant by that. “Uh… yes I guess I do…”
Gaz jumped down from the couch. “Then you’re a person who would be with Dib freely…” she said with a shudder and left the room.
Dib let out a small nervous laugh. “Heh…don’t mind her… she’s always like that…”
Sid just nodded and followed after Dib as he got a blanket from one of the closets. “You can sleep on the couch…” he said. Then suddenly a monitor flied inside the room from nowhere. “Hello there son! I’m afraid I won’t be home tonight so you’ll have to…oh I didn’t know you had a guest my son!” a strange looking man on the monitor said as if flew closer to Sid.
Unconsciously she took a step back. “Hello...” she said. But the monitor was already on gone.
There was a small awkward silence, before Sid decided to go for the big shot.
“So…um… you really believe that Zim is an alien?” she asked.
Dib should’ve gotten suspicious here. He should’ve been more careful. But he wasn’t. His brain was too busy with the though of someone actually being interested.
“I don’t believe!” he said with a new gleam in his eyes. “I KNOW!”
“Okay… how do you know… you…got any proof or something?” she smiled.
Dib got thrilled. “Oh yes! Lot’s of them! You wanna see?” He asked so happily that Sid almost felt sorry for him. “Sure!”
She followed him into his room which was dark and smelled like old sheets, electricity and metal. (strange mix huh? xD ) She sat down on his bed while he picked up a box from under his desk. Then he put them on a row on the bed. There was a big bunch of pictures and two computer discs. She picked up a couple of pictures and looked at them, somewhat amused.
Yup, it was Zim alright. And pretty good photos too.
“Well..?” Dib asked after a while. “What do you think?”
Sid looked up surprised. “Oh...um… they’re very good…” she said turning the pictures.
Dib narrowed one eyebrow. “You don’t seem very surprised with them.”
Sid realized she had almost exposed herself. “Well I mean… I actually don’t know what to believe…” she lied and smiled at him. She just thought of something really important. Where the hell was she going to carry all these stuff? She forgot to bring her backpack… ‘If I’ll ever get the chance to steal it that is…’ she thought as she looked at the pictures.
But then suddenly it came. Like a light from a dark and storming sky.
“DIIIIB!” they heard Gaz shout from the Kitchen. “Did you eat all the cereals?”
Dib turned to Sid with a worried look. “One moment….” he said and ran out from the room. Sid rapidly got to her feet and started to walk back and forth in the room. Now, now, now was her chance. And she didn’t even know how to… She then glanced at his garbage can. She ran over to it, fell on her knees and emptied it on the floor. Luckily, all that it had contained was a few paper balls. She ripped out the plastic bag inside the can and started to shove all the pictures and discs inside, her heart pumping like crazy. “Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick…!” she said to herself and then sneaked over to the door and peeked out. She could still here Gaz’s and Dib’s voices from the kitchen.
She then took her chances and walked out from Dib’s room. To run now would look to strange if he happens to see her. So she tried to stay as calm as possible, even though her whole body was shaking like never before.
She was almost at the door when she heard a voice behind her. “Hey… you’re leaving?”
She froze and turned around with the bag behind her back, facing Dib. “Yea.. sorry… I just got a call from my dad on my cell phone he’s home so I’m going” she said a bit to quickly and turned back to the door and walked through it before he could say anything. She held her breath as she walked down the lawn. Then she heard him yell. Her feet didn’t obey her anymore, and she sprinted away as fast as she could from Dib’s lawn and down the street.
“Hey! Get back here!!” She heard Dib yell behind her. But she was not going to stop. Instead she ran faster. After a few seconds she afforded to look over her shoulder and her heart sank when she saw how close Dib was behind her. “Wow… he’s faster than he looks!” she thought in a moment of humour. But this wasn’t a very good laughing-moment.
As she turned a corner, she felt like she was going to faint of exhaustion. Her heart was pumping so furiously, breathing was a pain, and she had a hard time seeing straight. “I seriously have to work out more...” she though as she looked back again and saw Dib coming around the corner. There was a dead end.
“Oh no…” she whispered and turned around seeing Dib stop right in front of her. He kneeled down slightly and gasped horribly for air. “I…(pant)….got….you now…(gasp) …Sid…” he panted and leaned against the wall. As did Sid. Actually they both looked pretty funny, leaning against the wall, gasping for air. Sid pressed her back towards the dead-end wall and glared at Dib.
He narrowed his eyes at her. “Why?”
Sid just shook her head. “It’s...um…kind of complicated…” was all she could say. He took a step toward her and she pulled the bag closer to herself. “Give me the bag, Sid!” he demanded, reaching out a hand. She shook her head again. “I can’t… maybe you could…you know…get new ones?” she said and grinned at him. He just rolled his eyes. “What are you going to do with them anyway? Give them to Zim?”
In lack of a good response, Sid just stared back at him. He sighed and shook his head. “You don’t know what you’re doing! He’s going to destroy all man-kind!” he yelled. She was quiet. “I know…” she then said without looking at him.
He blinked. “But then why do you…?”
“It doesn’t matter, now get out of my way!” she yelled back at him. He took another step towards her. “Will you listen to yourself? Are you going to let him wipe out the whole human-race? I don’t know what he’s done to you, but I can help…!” he said as he walked closer. Sid shifted her eyes confused. His offer did appeal to her. It appealed to her a lot. But she didn’t dare to risk it. Not…yet. Suddenly Dib charged at her and reached for the bag. She kicked him and tried to push him aside and run pass him, but he grabbed her arm and was about to reach for the bag again when he saw something on her wrist.
He froze for a second “What is that?” he asked mostly to himself and pushed up her sleeve. Sid just pulled and tugged her arm, trying to free herself. Dib looked up at Sid with a questioning look on his face, still holding on to her arm. “What is this?” He asked and pointed at the wristband. “Uum….” Was the answer before a strange sound was heard from above. Both Dib and Sid looked up in the sky surprised and saw a smaller pink, red and purple ship lower down towards them. “ZIM!!” Dib shouted at the ship as it landed and Zim jumped out with a determined look on his face. Dib shoved Sid behind himself in a protective way.
He glared at Zim. “I’m on to you! I won’t let you…NYAAAAAH!!” both he and Sid suddenly screamed when the familiar bolt of electricity went through Sid’s body to Dib’s arm. Both of them fell down on the ground. But Sid stood up pretty quickly on shaky lags and walked over to Zim, who pushed her inside the ship, took the bag and gave Dib an annoyingly wide grin of success before he went inside the ship.
Dib watched them disappear and gritted his teeth.
