My old obsession is restarting, methinks, after reading the latest Shonen Jump. It had the first chapters of Shaman King where Hao appears for more than one panel. The katakana and kanji in the picture say "Hao-sama." Though, the "sama" kanji is a little too dark...
Cross-hatching is a shading technique; one that uses nothing but lines layered over each other in different directions. In cartooning (according to what I've seen) it's most useful for illustrating burns/injuries/bruises/dirt/smeared blood on different surfaces; but usually on people.
We just started studying cross-hatching in my Foundation Drawing class in college. And so far, I really, really enjoy using it.
Rough outline sketch done in graphite, then done over entirely in black Pilot pen.
