Rose of Versailles is a classic shoujo manga written by Ryoko Ikeda, that tells the story about Oscar François de Jarjeyes, a girl who was born into a military noble family some decades before the French Revolution. Her father, after noticing his dream of having a male heir would never come true (he had had six daughters already) decides to raise her, his younger daughter, as a boy (that's why she has a male's name) and years later, she becomes the commander of the Royal Guards, responsible for the security of Marie Antoinette, the future queen of France. Her and Oscar are the ones portrayed above.
Rose of Versailles is also known as Berusaiyu no Bara, Versailles no Bara and Lady Oscar. What I like the most about this story is how it mixes real characters and historical events with fictional ones. I didn't have the opportunity of reading the manga, but I watched the anime and simply loved all about it. I highly recommend it.
