Rem is in fact female, hun. In both the anime and the manga there were mis-translations of the he/she pronoun. For the most part, Rem was labelled "she". (Depends which translations you've been looking at, I guess.)
There was also nothing to prove she was 'in' love with Misa; a shinigami dies when it uses a death note to protect a human it feels an attachment towards.
The voice actors in both the Japanese & English anime were female (Kimiko Saito & Colleen Wheeler). The movies, bizarrely, made Rem a guy. Dunno why. -_-
...And who's to say she had to be a 'he' to love Misa, if that were the case? ;-)

Truely awesome! I love the detail you put into her. I would like to draw her, but her little spikey things discourage me. I'm not great with detail. TT.TT But, like I said before, pure awesomeness!
