I did just use real paint for fanart.
This picture drove me crazy because, for one thing, I had no references. Usually, when I'm painting with real paint, I have a photo reference or a real thing sitting in front of me, telling me colors and values and, most important to me, temperature. In digital art, there are some things I, at least, can't create well and temperature is one of them. There's something about trying to create true temp. with pixels that just doesn't . . . work. That's also the reason this is a much stronger piece in person - your eye reads the temperature better and it's more interesting.
The other thing is, trying to photograph this picture so that the colors stayed true to the real painting was impossible. Mostly the thing turned out into this ugly, ugly red-orange photo- or it was way too light. Nothing that can be fixed with Photoshop, anyway. *Twitch*
