Thanks very much! I really had to work to get this color scheme to smooth out. I actually did quite a bit of adjustment in Photoshop. The original colored pencil drawing is much more grayed out - I was within inches of just scrapping the thing and starting over when I realized that it's the 21st Century and Photoshop fixes *everything*. ^_~

I use Prismacolor pencils to the exclusion of all else these days. I have some Faber Castells that I need to try out, but I'm rather addicted to the soft and squishy lead of Prismacolors, so it's been hard to change over. ^_~

lots of detail...must have taken a LOOOOONG time! O_O

It took about 30 hours in total, but I spread that out over several weeks. ^_^ Thanks!

I've heard of a Alien King. Now I know that it's kick @$$! This is great and one of the best pictures of a Alien I've ever seen! Great Job.

Yeah, I think that one had been developed for the Aliens: Stronghold comic miniseries. We never heard any more of the king/emperor concept after that. The friend who had me do this particular piece, though, has had an emperor Alien in her head for quite some time, though, and so it was a pleasure to get the concept a bit of continued spotlight time. ^_^

I managed the smooth gradations by using a lot of different layers of color (and in this case, a lot of different layers of grayscale, too). It's mostly a matter of smooshing the pencil lead around until it gets to the consistency I like, and then maybe tweaking it by adding a bit of white on the highlit side, or a bit of blue or dark green in the shadow areas. I'm also using really soft pencils, so it almost is like scuplting with very thin clay. ^_^
