You're probably thinking that Carmelita's being kind of a jerk, and she is.

But she's a ninth year at her school, and the entire time she's been upset about her father leaving and the gossip that spread quickly around the school. By the time she was sort of comfortable with her father's absence (though she did miss him), all the cliques in school had been formed and most of the girls considered her an enemy.

Girls can be really hurtful. Boys yell and girls destroy your entire life and laugh as it crumbles around you. xD

So, yeah, Carmelita's pretty lacking in the self-confidence department, and when Mittie comes along thinking of friendship, Carmelita's probably thinking that she either just got into the school and hasn't had time to hate her, or that Mittie only came around to hurt her.
