Title: Videl v. Ryofu
The Story:
During a visit to Katsucon in February 2005, I bought something that put this idea in my head. It was print of a fight between Naruto and Luffy of One Piece, and it made me think about doing something like that myself. I decided that I’d go with a couple of characters that I happen to like, and this was the result, Videl od DBZ to your left, and Hosen Ryofu of IkkiTousen to your right.
My Take:
As a fan of both series, this was to be the first of many random matches that I could think of. The idea was to be centered around the “Big Fighters Tournament” from IkkiTousen, where fighters from different schools would fight against each other, sort of like a sporting event. I had quite a few more of these matches written down, but unfortunately I was too lazy to even get them on paper.
What I Like Most:
There are plenty of things for me to be pleased with here, like how Ryofu’s skirt came out, it took a while, but I felt it was worth the effort. In what has become pretty much a tradition for me, I drew Videl in a different style than the traditional Toriyama style. I’m also pleased that I managed to express a height difference here, it may not be much of a big deal, but it shows me that I’m making some kind of progress, as compared to my last effort.
What I Dislike Most:
I’m not completely happy with how Ryofu’s hair came out here. As much as I had to fight with it, this is the best I could get it to look. There’s usually a coloring issue that gets my attention as well…I felt that I could have done a better job with Ryofu’s sleeve as well.
Final Thoughts:
This idea would end up spawning two other drawings with actual fight scenes, and may still have more on the way once I stop being lazy. In the meantime, I am working on a background for this one using some buildings that I happen to see while at work.
