Headcannon time: I believe that Sherlock’s parents sent him to lessons after he showed interests, but forced him to keep playing even after he lost interest in playing for recitals and such. At this point, he sticks to playing slow “depressing” music that everyone in the household is tired of hearing. Mostly, he plays this because it annoys the hell out of his brother (like how I annoy my brother with my piano playing :D). When he grows up though, he refuses to have a piano in his apartment, but every once in a while Sherlock will sneak in the back of a church to play out what he cannot on his violin.

And then Little!John comes in with a ball and throws it at Sherlock's head, says "sorry," John's mom comes in to pick John up and say "sorry," and Sherlock vows that he will find that blond kid and make him his slave for ruining his perfect depressing and private piano melody.
