Oskar Kokoschka was an Austrian Expressionist artist.
Born in Pöchlarn, Austria-Hungary in 1886 and died aged 93 in Montreux, Switzerland in 1980.

JadisI had never heard of this artist, so I googled him. very interesting. thanks for the education. 
I"ve never really worked with oil pastels, I'd like to try them sometime. how large is the original?

Oil Pastels have a poor reputation as  ARTIST's materials, for some odd reasons.
Many people still think it is just for little children.  LOL
But they have been used by famous artists like Picasso, Delaunay... etc...
It is a very pleasant medium and you should really try them.
It fits your style, and you will enjoy them.

Jadisthey seem like they would be messy but flexible, like charcoal, only more colorful. I'll have to try to remember to get some next time I go to Hobby Lobby.

I've heard about him a word or two, but he's somehow forgotten in Hungary, even he lived and created his artworks in the same era of other reputed expressionist artists like István Csók or Károly Ferenczy, just to name a few.

Strangely he is rather famous outside Hungary while sadly  he has fallen in oblivion in Hungary.
