This is my entry into Bullsnakes "Beautiful Girls" contest. I figured I'd try with one of his less-than-favorite DOA characters. Which looks to have been either a stupid move (or a ballsy one) given that there were some very good entries that were his favourite character.

What I like about the pic - the colouring. Being that I cannot colour, and was reduced to using coloured pencils. The colours, particularly on the original piece turned out very vibrant. Here, they are a little faded.

What I don't like - I inked it. It did NOT need to be inked. Sure ink was perfect in some parts of the drawing, but I feel that I did alot of damage with the pen.

"Olson twin........Full House.....ack, anyway...

Not being really THAT familair with DOA (aside from Bullsnake's obsession with Ayane), I can't say that this really looks like a videogame character to me. It looks like someone's niece or something (or an Olson Twin). So I'm going to imagine this is a drawing of JuanValdez's niece :)

The coloring is nice, but there are not enough darks to balance out the lights. This image is inked? I don't see pen anywhere on it. You mean the outlines? Hmm..well..ok. The eyes are nice, but the nose and mouth a little awkward. The body is good in all ways except one. Look at the right side of the torso. now trace the line from her right-side hip up to where it meets the shirt. Not trace an imaginart line from THAT point, up to where her underarm is...What happened there? Uberlarge ribcage? Hmm..The forearm is also a little too long on the right-side. Seems like I should see a wrist bone about the place where the image cuts off.

Speaking of that..notice how her hands and legs are submersed below the bottom of the picture? This inevitably makes fer feel pulled down and weighted. This creeps me out; why? becuase she looks like some kind of Swamp Thing rising from the briny depths....and that makes her half-sincere, half-sarcastic smile even more creepy.

The best thing is the coloring, the worst thing is her ribcage on the right side, and the ugliest thing is the Swampthing pose/composition.

Compared to the work in your gallery, I can tell that drawing female figures is not your forte. You seem really adept at drawing machines, and realistic-type people, but not necessarily in a sexy style. I like "Cosplay grrl" and "surfergirl" better than this picture, despite that they might be simpler images. You did alot of work on the coloring here, but it fell flat due to other problems with the image."

Bullsnake says:

The "Swamp Thing" analogy Co-J did is pretty harsh..but he just explained why he said it...And in a weird way it makes sense.. I do agree that her limbs being cropped at the bottom of the image pulls it down, and her bent torso feels like she's rising up and pulling against that bottom area.

but "Swamp Thing?" erm.. well..anyway...

I like the way the hair falls down around her shoulders. The coloring job is decent as well, but like Co-J said, a wider range of tone would be nicer (get some deeper shadows in to make the image rounder).

The anatomical quibbles have been stated already..by Captain Weirdo..aka Co-J..

I'd have preferred a pic of Ayane, but it doesn't really matter cos I said I wasn't going to be biased (and this isn't Kasumi..which I'd have to be biased towards even tho I just said I wouldn't be).

This pic doesn't win any of the awards, but it's a nice try and effort and all. I think it stacks up about evenly with the rest of your work in your gallery which is pretty good. I'd rather it show average effort than less.

but..anyway.. It didn't win, but not bad and thanks for participating.

(do more ayane)

^_^

zakumanWell best of luck on the contest. This is pretty sweet. In some ways it looks more realistic. But the eyes are definately DOA style... I mean you nailed the eyes, good job man.
