Willow ‘Will’ Graham grew up in poor, rural Louisiana, raised by her father; she has no recollection of her mother, who left when she was very young. As such, she grew up learning more about fishing and working on an engine than how to put on make up or coordinate an outfit, though not from lack of help from the scant few female role-models and friends in her life.

She has an unusual empathetic ability that gives her glimpses int the minds and thoughts of others and this did not help her growing up as a weird poor kid in the very religious rural South.
She personally describes herself as being somewhere on the autism spectrum due to her social difficulties and awkwardness as well as her dislike of eye contact; she often uses her glasses or even her hair to act as barriers.
After graduating high-school, she moved to New Orleans where she enrolled in the police academy; she served there for only a few years until not long after becoming a homicide detective, losing her job due to ‘not being able to use her gun when necessary’. Shortly after, her father passed away and between her savings and the inheritance from his estate, she moved and started over.
A couple years later, she now lives in a farm house in rural Wolf Trap, Virginia; she has several dogs, all former strays she has taken in. She quite likes her home - its quiet and lets her be away from people while also not far from where she teaches forensic classes at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
With her empathetic abilities, she finds it is easier on her psyche to isolate herself than be in the heart of a city; she tried that in New Orleans and was a nightmare.
She likes her classroom - it is nice, quiet…but unfortunately she has a unique set of abilities that leads Jack Crawford to drawing her out into the field…
Will’s empathy has given her an ability that she calls “interpreting the evidence” - she is able to assume the state of mind a murderer has after visiting the crime scene. She takes in the imprinted psychic impressions of the killer on the location, allowing her to recreate the thinking as well as the actions with herself as the killer in order to understand more about them.
Unfortunately, the ability to do this shows profound risk to her psyche and she fears that it can lead to psychological issues by accidently bringing back aspects of the killers she helps hunt.
