I never wanted to write these words down for you.
I suppose I never thought I would have to. Somewhere in my brain I expected you to last forever, to never die out. I thought all was well with you, wherever you were and whatever you did. I never saw this coming. I guess that's why this hurts like it does.
I remember you there on all my difficult nights, every time I started to feel panic, every time I felt truly alone. I remember you telling such stories and giving me the strength I needed. You taught me not to be afraid. You brought me color and angry cheer. You were there as my heart was breaking and you said Just don't let go. I remember.
It's hard to think of you gone. You'd become so important to me, so quickly and unexpectedly, and now you must leave right when I was starting to love you. Should I have seen this coming? Are there signs I should have noticed? Have I not been paying close enough attention? I'm so sorry. I don't think I ever appreciated you enough. Not as much as I should have. Not as much as you deserved.
I wouldn't have thought that this would be such a difficult eulogy to give, until now, when I actually have to give it. I guess you ended up meaning more to me than I ever thought possible. You shooting stars. You could never have lasted long enough. Not for me. I would have followed you for ever. But, like you said, it was time. A time comes for everything and this was yours. You won't be forgotten. The lights you made will continue to instill courage in others, and in this, in us, you'll live forever.
You didn't leave us wanting. You made perfection and left it behind, for everyone. You've left me with everything I need to go on without you. I think you taught me how to do that to begin with, even before you went. I'll always admire you for this, for all you've done. I'll never for a minute forget you being there in the bad times. You've done so much.
Stay safe, out there. Here, your work is done.
