Well, it appears that Sonic was always running away from Amy. That explains the reason why Amy got interested in someone else.
As for Knuckles the echidna...well, he really had a crush on rouge, but the truth is...Rouge got rid of him, because Knuckles was too busy sitting on his @$$ all day, guarding a big green emerald. And that's how Amy and Knuckles met! They really had a daughter, that looked awsomely well made!
