When the show started, it was WB's answer to Hanna&Barbera's Tom and Jerry, or at least the conception was similar.

The difference is that Sylvester is also hunting mice and baby kangaroo (in few episodes), while Tom focuses on Jerry (and sometimes Nibbles in comics and few series), with rare 1940s-1950s episodes when the duckling in introduced.
