Mother's Day is Sunday, so I'm posting this early.

Lava Glacier, or Lava Glacier Zone if you prefer, is one of the many stages that exist only in the GeneX universe. This is one of the earliest stages used in the series, seen in Tails the Fox chapters 6-7. The concept for the stage is that somehow, a giant glacier managed to drift over a volcanic crater, resulting in the heat from the volcano hollowing the glacier out and creating a massive igloo.

In game, the stage would be made up of platforms of both ice and molten rock. Chunks of the glacier have broken off and float on the surface of the vast sea of lava within the crater. Hidden in the stage are three keys to Eggman's temporary base, a short-term hideout he had been using prior to the start of the story. Eggman was still in the process of moving to his new base, so security measures such as "Egg Pawn Wizards" (Egg Bishops, according to Sega) and Shadow Androids remain in place.

This stage is also the place where we first meet Gemini, who at the time was transformed into a majestic white dragon. A clumsy dragon, as well. Knuckles had to retrieve her wand from a robot before she could be of much use.

In the story, the stage ends when the glacier begins to collapse, initiating a rush to escape that is also a chase; Knuckles, Rouge and Metal Sonic battle it out for the Master Emerald along the way out, only to discover it is a fake when it shatters! Lava Glacier is one of the handful of stages to be destroyed, but pieces of it were still featured in GeneX Generations during the final chapter.

Author's Commentary!

I am mad. Every cool idea I ever have gets done like, a month later. Dang spies and thieves. I'm kidding of course, but... This is one of several ideas that I figure must have been done at practically the same time I concieved it. Except in this case, I hadn't thought of Hailfire Peaks from Banjo-Tooie when I was making this stage. However, I still got a bit miffed when I saw a fire-and-ice level in Super Mario Galaxy. Thinking about it now, they probably stole it from Banjo-Tooie and not me... I just thought I'd done it first at the time. I'm probably still the only one to try to explain such a stage scientifically, heh.

This remains one of my favorite stages that I created, though, and I was glad I could reuse it in Generations, though only in a very minor way. Visually, it looks pretty cool in my head, and is much more fleshed out than some other stages. Yet, not much to talk about. I'll try to find a stage with more interesting details to discuss and less plot rehashing next time I do a stage... though I'm not sure plot rehashing isn't the main thing I'd end up doing for these articles...
