Blog Entry: World of GeneX - Anubis the Jackal
Anubis is a black and brown jackal with a tan muzzle, white gloves and shoes, and red eyes. He is most frequently seen wearing a Covenant of Despair uniform.
He was first seen in GeneX- A New Beginning. He had been sent to aquire the Master Emerald, given a black & white photo of Knuckles as reference to find the emerald's guardian. However, he mistook Punchy for Knuckles as a result, and fought fiercely with him, accidentally knocked into a lava pit at the end. He was presumed dead, but... it seems his pyrokinetic powers saved him!
His only reappearance for a long time was in GeneX - Spell of the Shadows, the second Halloween Special. This version of Anubis was killed by the Deathbringer, and never seen again.
Anubis makes his return to GeneX in "Knuckles the Echidna", where he finally learns his mistake from "A New Beginning." Working for the Covenant of Despair, he goes on several missions that put him into conflict with Sonic the Hedgehog, and they become bitter foes. He also cameoed in GeneX Generations.
Anubis is, as stated, a pyrokinetic, and therefore uses flames in combat. He is also a necromancer, specializing in summoning mummies wrapped in black cloth to terrorize his foes. It is unclear where he gained this power, especially since he carries no Chaos Relic. There may be more mystery to Anubis than meets the eye...
Author Commentary!
I don't gotta do this EVERY time, do I? I don't really have much else to say about Anubis... He was the first/second character I made with the intent to use him in the Covenant of Despair. I decided to have Conan join later, since I didn't know what to do with him, honestly. Unfortunately, I didn't have a uniform design yet at his debut, so... there actually is a sprite of him *gasp* naaaaked!! (wait, he's still got shoes and gloves. never mind)
I actually initially thought to make him colorblind, and that'd be why he mistook Punchy for Knuckles, but I didn't think I could keep up such a minute detail over time. Also, I hear that even colorblind people can see SOME colors. (true story)
His sort of rivalry with Sonic came up organically... I originally planned on pitting him against the echidnas, but... they have their hands full already. Then, Sonic and Anubis kept running into each other, yet not fighting. So, I finally caved and made them fight, heh. I'll shuffle the enemy deck around a bit for the last third of the story, though... well, I'll try to.
