Blog Entry: Preview Week 2015!! - GeneX
As GeneX - Knuckles the Echidna draws to a close, the time has finally come for me to move the series forward. It's a brave new world, where Sonic Team has slowed to a crawl, and I have also voiced my desire to split GeneX apart from the official games to form its own continuity, thus allowing me to make better use of the characters I didn't create. (I.E. Sonic, Blaze, etc.)
That's not to say GeneX won't still share continuity with the games. It's more that I won't do 15-25 chapter adaptations of the games anymore. (GeneX Generations really slowed me down, as did that Mario & Sonic story) Fortunately, I started a little thing called GeneX: the Series.
A new season of GeneX: the Series is on the way, the first thing to come after Knuckles and Generations. Included in those episodes could be many things; I'm unsure how many episodes I'll have time to write, so I'm juggling ideas around trying to determine which is best to run with. Among those ideas are one-shots based around Sonic Lost World and the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. (the latter having loose canon at best) These will have pretty much been the only 2 main series Sonic games to come out since Generations, so I'll be all caught up.
Another concept in mind for season 2 of GeneX: the Series is ongoing story arcs. My goal is to keep individual episodes self-contained, but have one or more story arcs running through the season, to come to a head in the finale. I'm not sure what I'll go with, but I'll share a couple concepts...
One concept is that... for a reason I'm not prepared to disclose, nearly everyone is out to catch Sonic. This ranges from villains like Eggman to even his own best pal, Tails. This is intended mainly as a comedic plot, as we watch each character attempt to catch the blue blur in their own way...and see how Sonic manages to make them look like Wile E. Coyote chasing the Road Runner. This could interfere with my idea of self-contained episodes, though, so I don't know...
A darker concept is that Eggman will perfect the roboticizer (I'll spell-check that if I use this plot). Much like I introduced Athair in GeneX - Knuckles the Echidna, this plot would introduce Uncle Chuck and would see Eggman act a bit more like SatAM Robotnik...to a point. It wouldn't be permanent, I do have an endgame in mind for this plotline, and would make for a great season finale... I'm just not sure about how to arc it through the season...yet.
And of course I have plots in mind for individual episodes as well. One early episode will deal with the ramifications of the ruins where Rainbow lives being discovered, which happened in a fairly recent chapter of Knuckles the Echidna. Another plot may fully introduce Blaze to the main cast of GeneX.
Next year is Sonic's 25th Anniversary, and GeneX's 10th! In honor of the momentous occasion, I will be making some short stories much like 5 years ago... Exactly what they will entail, I've not decided yet. If Sega announces a 25th Anniversary game, that may help.
Lastly, there are some origin stories that I've yet to fully explore. I want to set aside a number of chapers to attempt a complete telling of Bucky's backstory. As Knuckles the Echidna comes to a close, it will really feel like time for this. It may be released as part of GeneX: the Series or as a separate short story on its own. In addition, it was very recently drawn to my attention that an origin story for Illusi may be in order, so I may do that as well.
I probably won't get to all of these plots, but I'll do as much as I can before 2017, when I will start preparations for the 3rd tale in GeneX's main trilogy, starting with a short story that is themed as something of a tournament... More on that probably at next E3.
I wrote this journal yesterday, and since I wrote it, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice has been announced for the 3DS. I have put thought into writing a crossover between GeneX and Sonic Boom, but getting that done isn't a priority right now. I'm giving the show some time to build itself up, maybe eventually they'll think about introducing Shadow or Metal Sonic or something. (they're in the games; not in the show. WHY???)
