Sonic Boom isn't anything like the trailer made it sound in terms of plot, that's what stood out to me the most from the first two episodes. Instead of an adventure comedy series, I got a comedy with lighter action. The strangest thing are not Knuckles' overgrown biceps or Amy's running gag of a personality. Though those points may seem a bit off, they are ultimately not at all difficult to get used to. It's the relationship between Eggman and Sonic's group that's strange.

In episode one, Sonic held sidekick tryouts after deciding the job was too dangerous for Tails. Sonic allowing Eggman to try out could be excused as being cocky, but Eggman actually trying out instead of sending a robot in disguise or something doesn't make sense.

The second episode took this further with Eggman moving in with Sonic and Tails, pretending to make a truce to tire them out playing games and watching movies. Sonic can be a bit cocky, but that can only be stretched so far, he's not an idiot. As for Eggman, he's but a shadow of a villain, who seems to have a friendly rivalry with Sonic rather than real enmity. His attempts to supposedly kill the hedgehog don't feel very threatening if he's having a somewhat civil conversation with Sonic and his pals a few minutes later, being pestered by Amy to talk about self-esteem.

With Eggman being pretty much a harmless idiot, the series feels lacking in terms of real challenges. It makes me wonder if it'll all be silly humor or if a real villain will show up. On the positive side, it does look very nice with bright colors and super cute characters. The animation isn't extraordinary, but it doesn't need to be, the show is good to look at and everyone except the prehistoric cat girl plays a distinct role, but she can be overlooked too. My only real critique is that Tails' tails spin way too slow when he flies and it just looks odd, like he's floating for no reason rather than being lifted helicopter style. This shouldn't be too hard to fix, just speed up the animation, maybe that's why it stands out so much, it shouldn't have been missed.

I'm not really excited for new episodes as I thought I would be if the show was actually like the trailer, but I might still play an episode in the background now and then while I do something else.
