In childhood days we used to read rather sing in melodious sound a poem, “rain rain go away, come again another day!” But it would be better to say rain rain come again, come again every day! Because of the sheer love every one of us have for the monsoon. With the conspicuous lightening and thundering sounding the bugle for the arrival of the monsoon, our eyes follow the black cloud movements. The light drizzling brings out the best fragrance of the nature, that smell of the earth that fills your nostrils. Many of us would remember the urge to eat the wet earth. With the heavy pitter patter sound against the roofs and thatches the heart and the body wants to swing under it no holds barred. Many Hindi films depict rain- drenched song sequences. But that’s an old story told over and over again.
What we are dealing in here are beautiful and mesmerizing paintings by a plethora of brilliant artists, their contribution, its consequences and reverberations. So, let us put the spotlight on the artists and their artworks depicting monsoon on to the canvas. Like any one of us, artists too love the monsoon proved by the colossal number of artworks that depict this season. This season of many other seasons becomes their muse and it is carved out on paper.
Innumerable Indian paintings by Samiran Sarkar, Sachin Upadhye, Sanjay Dhawale, Mahesh Mankar, Jiaur Rahman, Somnath Bothe, Ananda Das and many more speaks volumes about their passion, the mannerism, the quirk and the finer details they work on while making a vista alive. The paintings are a discovery into how the paths become wet with rain, the dusty air gives way to moist and serene breeze, mud and umbrellas become ubiquitous, the knee deep water and the streets submerged with it, the change in hues of sky and the overall environment. Each painting becomes a story into itself.
Spilling the beans on how they can refine the luxury of a living space, any painting depicting rain is a treasure. It can be conveniently and profitably invested into. You are never at a loss when you put your hard earned bucks into it. They have the ability and suitability to rev up your energy levels instantaneously.
For those of us who love art but when lifting a pencil cannot reproduce more than something out of this world literally, which even we cannot understand- ogle at the paintings amorously. For some of us who cannot paint, they become souvenirs to collect reminiscent of some era gone by, irretrievable but precious. We are reminded of small ships crafted from paper- another favorite pastime- which we used to put in water and sail them considering ourselves as Colombus. The teenage first love and serenading your love mate with desi pakodas and chai! The youthful vim to go out, make hullabaloo and dance in the rain till it lasts. For some, it is a way of celebration of life.
