Paintings have always been one of the simplest and efficient ways to heighten the visual appeal of any space. But, did you know that paintings could be turned into animated feature film? Apart from being a mode of expression and item of decoration, people like you and I do not know of any other use of paintings. We buy paintings. While buying paintings, we explore number of paintings for sale, adore the work of artists, choose the perfect artwork that suits our taste and pocket and buy them. For us, the process of having a painting ends by placing them in our homes and offices. We would never think that paintings can be turned into feature film. But, this extraordinary feat has been achieved by the team of ‘Loving Vincent’– world’s first feature-length fully painted animation film, which is due in cinemas later this year.

The animated movie revolves around the life and the controversial death of the celebrated artist Vincent van Gogh. The story is told through the animation of his work and the characters who inhabit them. The movie has a total of 56,000 frames and every frame is a work of art in itself – each frame is hand-painted oil on canvas, painted by artists perfect in van Gogh’s post-impressionistic style.

The Inspiration

The inspiration for the movie came from van Gogh’s quote: “We cannot speak other than by our paintings.”

Inspired by the philosophy, the real life husband-and-wife and the co-writers and directors of the movie, Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman knitted over 120 of van Gogh’s famous paintings into the movie’s plot to narrate the intriguing story of his turbulent life. The people who van Gogh painted in real life are the characters in the movie who narrate stories and events often in an interview format.

Kobiela and Welchman used van Gogh’s paintings and letters to come up with a story to give an insight of van Gogh’s life, career and his mysterious suicide. The paintings provided the visual stimulus; thus, the idea to make the entire film in van Gogh’s artistic style was conceived.

Each Frame a Masterpiece

Over the last two years, the production team of Loving Vincent has been busy creating the animation in a studio situated outside the Gdansk in Poland. There are 91 artists in the studio who have been painting the frame-by-frame images which link van Gogh’s masterpieces. The team has been working in collaboration with Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The museum has been providing guidance to the artists painting the 56,000 paintings in the post-impressionistic style in specially designed and patented workstations.

It has been stated that the painters had to learn to act as none of them had any animation experience. They had to realize that they were not creating pretty paintings, but a performance. Infused with rich colors and many lines, van Gogh’s paintings have a sense of movement and life. All this ensure that it will be an enthralling experience to watch the artworks come alive in this film.

Ahead of its launch, the movie is gaining a cult status. It will undoubtedly pick up some distinctive awards at the forthcoming awards ceremonies.

A Troubled Life

Despite his celebrated status as the biggest influence in the modern world of fine art, van Gogh was barely accepted as a great artist during his lifetime. He suffered from mental illness for the most part of his professional life. The movie emphasis on the aftermath of the artist’s alleged suicide.

Some art researchers have shunned the explanation of van Gogh’s suicide attempt and suspect that someone else shot van Gogh. It seems that there was enough proof for this theory to be probed before a senior official at the Van Gogh Museum advised that the investigation should be dropped because the topic was “too controversial”.

Today, van Gogh is considered amongst the most celebrated artists of the world. He is recognized as a maestro and one of the most famous artists in the history of fine art. He inspires this entire generation of new artists, who imitate his style and put their fascinating paintings for sale.
