Well... Although I'm not entirely satisfied with it, I think it is because I am so accustomed to drawing on paper 3 or 4 times bigger, I thought I would get this in for the Dragon Contest...  Still doing the style with the slightly translucent wings.  It has been a long... Looooong time since I did a pencil drawing.

I would welcome constructive comments, if you have any to offer, as well as compliments.  I would agree with you if you thought I might need more definition of the scales, but again... This might be something I could do if I drew larger and then had a digital camera instead of a scanner...  Someday I'll do that!

Draco looks pleased, as though he knew I snuck up to that summit to draw his likeness.  He is a bit vain (named a mountain after himself!), but that's just between you and I! LOL

silverstreamShweetness. I can't draw dragons very well. I've been practicing, though.

spiritedchaosMarvellous, I love the composition of the page!

It's a great piece, I don't think you need more definition on the scales - I think it'd get too fussy and with dragons a lot of it is all about the dramatic lines of the body and not the tiny little things. The only thing I cold find to concrit on is the shadows - using a softer pencil on the really, really deep shadows (mainly the bits of the belly behind the fore and hind-legs) would bring a bit more depth. Also I couldn't place the light source exactly - I guessed top right and out of the page? If so would there be a band of shadow cast by the tail on the back wing? Just a nitpick though, it's just as good without it.

Also, I <3 his smug little smile!

AriaGunnir on February 26, 2007, 10:10:31 AM

AriaGunnir on
AriaGunnirActually I was thinking the light was from the sun coming up on the lower angle from about the middle of the page to the right so that the shadow was cast just a little above the dragon... The crag he is on is at a peculiar angle though, so perhaps I just messed up a bit on the shadow behind his head....  Hmmm...  *squints at Draco*

AriaGunnirAww, thanks!  I'm glad you feel there is enough detail... That was one of my worries...

UchikiHow can you not be satisfied with this beautiful piece of pencil work?! I adore the pic and love the dragon's cheeky grin. Do more dragon drawing, please!!

AriaGunnir on February 25, 2007, 3:32:29 AM

AriaGunnir on
AriaGunnirThank you so much for the nice comment... I  most definitely will draw more dragons.  LOL...  Well, I don't HATE the picture, I just meant I'm more used to drawing them about 4 to 6 times bigger, and that way I have more detail...  I just felt that it lacked some detail...  Also I haven't drawn in pencil, except to sketch, for like about a decade... I forgot how soft the stupid 6B Pencils are... I had one about half the length of a regular pencil and now it's down to a nub... And it's nearly impossible to keep it nice and sharp for more than 2 seconds...  LOL  So, you see where I'm coming from?

Uchiki on February 25, 2007, 3:34:50 AM

Uchiki on
Uchiki*nods* Hence, I only use 3B pencils. Last longer. I find that pencils like 6B and up are too soft for my type of drawing, and yes, I can relate to the constant sharpening of the pencil.

jiraI applaud the pencil detail artwork techniques applied and leave the criticism to others (I’m not here to nit-pick)! I know what I like and this is a nice piece!

poor us(the contestants of less experience)...curse you...curse you well...

REALLY great drawing!!

AriaGunnir on February 25, 2007, 12:02:31 AM

AriaGunnir on
AriaGunnirWell, I can say with certainty, I've never been cursed WELL before... LOL  I don't know what YOU'RE talking about, because I've seen your gallery... You have terrific skillz, and it looks like to me like you have experience in art!  LOL  If I could have a "well curse" does that mean that no matter how hard I try to fail at something, I'll always succeed??  It's kind of a paradox though, trying to fail and failing at failing, so maybe that would be the end of the world or something! LOL

thedudedisturbed on February 25, 2007, 7:18:59 AM

thedudedisturbed on
thedudedisturbedwell really its a meaningless gesture...it just cancels it self out..

AriaGunnir on February 25, 2007, 8:45:27 AM

AriaGunnirOh!  *whew* what a relief!  Then I'm not cursed and can go back to living my life! LOL  Thanks for the compliment!

FirePhantom24 on February 24, 2007, 8:48:23 AM

FirePhantom24 on
FirePhantom24I love how flexible he looks. Those scales are better than any I've seen, not to mention draw. (That's the main reason my dragons don't have scales)

*faves* ^^ Well done!

AriaGunnir on February 24, 2007, 12:28:09 PM

AriaGunnir on
AriaGunnirYeah, I think that's why I didn't draw the details on the old one I did... Mind you, I suppose the scales on this fellow are much more crocodillian and the ones on the other are a lot smoother in texture.

BadArtist on February 24, 2007, 8:13:41 AM

BadArtist on
BadArtisthey it's from a book called dragonriders of pern.. i've head of that.. is it related to the movie Eragon?

AriaGunnir on February 24, 2007, 12:08:35 PM

AriaGunnir on
AriaGunnirNo, it's a completely separate storyline, but in my opinion just as wonderful!  Perhaps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonriders_of_Pern might help explain it better.  I read all the books I think; that's how good they were.  There are other authors I've read the entire series of, too, but I really liked hers.  Thanks for you kind comments and your interest!

BadArtistwikimedia... don't yea just wish there was wikireality? were we could say something was, and if enough people agreed, it were true?

AriaGunnir on February 25, 2007, 12:45:25 AM

AriaGunnirI knew there was a Wikipedia, but not a Wikimedia...   *checks out Wikimedia*  Wow!  That's interesting!  I usually just look for the pedia and not the media! LOL Now I see what you mean! http://wikimedia.org/

BadArtist on February 25, 2007, 2:47:21 AM

BadArtisthey cool i didn't know, for some reason i put media, but meant pedia... lol, i discovered the media!
