I got the idea for this comic after reading an article on Sonic CuLT (linky: VISIT OTHER PARTS OF WEBSITE AT OWN RISK - CONTAINS A LOT OF SWEARShttp://www.sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=3&gameid=18&subid=2&artid=4 )about the missing Rainbow Gem in Sonic Next-Gen. I used lead pencil, and edited it in Arcsoft PhotoImpression.
In case you don't know what's going on, here's the story...
After a long time searching, Tails found the missing Rainbow Gem, which is said to have been made with Chaos Emerald shards. (Don't know if that's true or not, but it would make sense if it did make it.)
Tails comes running to Sonic, waving the Gem in his hands. After he tells Sonic what it is, Sonic shouts 'YES!' and snatches the Gem, before dashing off to find 50 rings for their Chaos Energy. (Don't think Rings contain Chaos Energy, but I think it makes a bit of sense.) Sonic tries to use Super Transformation with the combined Chaos Energy of the Rings and the Rainbow Gem, but it didn't work. The Gem stopped circling him and he stopped floating. 'Did I just waste my time?' He wondered.

In Sonic 06 (for PS3 and X360: real name Sonic the Hedgehog) there is a Gem system that allows you to use various abilities. You buy the gems, and then you can use their power. While the game was being developed, a gem called the Rainbow Gem existed in the game. With some thorough rummaging through the disc, it's possible to find the icon for the Rainbow Gem. You can also find a description (also by searching the disc) that says:
????? You'll have to buy it to see what it does!
By hacking the game, it's possible to put the gem back in the game! Then, you can buy the Gem in one of the shops around town. Buy it with your Rings and switch to it. (Press the D-pad left or right until you see the Rainbow Gem.) Then, press R1 (keep forgetting what it is for X360, sorry) and Sonic will do an animation where he transforms into Super Sonic! However, he doesn't change color and he turns into regular Sonic when the animation is over.
The thing I made up was Sonic getting 50 rings; you don't need them to activate the Gem. Very interesting... Super Sonic in normal levels WAS going to appear in this game!
I read about why they removed him, and it seems that whenever he transformed he would fall through the floor and lose a life XD
