It was Link's birthday, and as his own birthday tradition, he was sleeping on the lookout nest. Aryll came up to him to wake him up. “Link! Grandma wants to see you! It must be your coming of age present! Go see her, and meet me back here!” Link sat up, still a bit tired from his nap, and then realized what Aryll was talking about. Today was the day! He would learn the story of the legendary Hero of Time, and he would get a special present of commemoration of this day. Link went down the ladder as fast as he could, careful to fall into the ocean below. As he ran down the dock, he saw some wild pigs running around by Mesa's house. “I'll get to them later,” he thought, “after I go home to see what Grandmas' going to give me!” As he reached his house, he saw Sue-Belle with a pot on her head. “Hi, Sue-Belle! Why do you have a pot on her head?” Sue-Bell carefully turned around and faced Link. “I have this pot on my head because I am carrying water to my house, because my grandfather cannot do it and Orca is always practicing with his swords, so I am the last one to do it. Maybe if we didn't live right above Orca, grandfather would get some rest. But, since Orca is grandfather's brother, we share the second story of his house with him, so I guess it would be fair if Orca could make a bit of noise with his swords. But the thing is, Grandfather makes such a big deal out of it. Well, happy birthday, Link! You better go home to see your Grandma so she can give you the coming of age gift!” Sue-Belle turned back to get the water, and Link carried on with his business. “Grandma, I'm home!” he called. No one answered. He went up to the small loft-like room by the door. There was the family shield. “That shield has been in this family for a while.” Link heard his grandma say. “Whoa, you scared me a little bit, Grandma.” Link said. “Link, it is time that you heard the story of the Hero of Time. A hundred or two years ago, a hero came and saved the ancient city of Hyrule from an evil ruler named Ganondorf. He was a wicked one; he turned the town into a deserted village filled with Gibdo's. Before Ganondorf's reign, Link tried to stop it. Ganondorf, known as Ganon at the time, was king of the Gerudos. He was attempting to break through a room in the Temple of Time where the Master Sword was held. The Master Sword was a magical sword that held the power of the Sages in it. This power could destroy all evil. Ganon also wanted to obtain the Triforce more than anything in the world. Anyone who gained possession of the Triforce would be all powerful. If it was a good person who had the Triforce, then the land would be swept with good. If it was an evil person, then all the land would be swept with evil. Link obtained three emeralds that he used to open the door in the Temple of Time so he could get to the Master Sword and defeat Ganon before he got to the Triforce. As he was arriving to the Temple of Time, Impa, Princess Zelda's guardian, came out of the castle town on a horse going as fast as she could, with Zelda with her. Just then, Ganon came out on his horse, chasing after them. Zelda left the Ocarina of Time for Link with the Song of Time for Link to use to open the door. As Link opened the Door of Time and pulled the Master Sword out of its pedestal, he aged 7 years older, into a young man. The Sage of Time talked to him, and set him out on his quest to find the other Sages. Over the seven years that Link had aged, Ganon had obtained the Triforce of Power, and that got Hyrule and all the other villages filled with evil. Even the Zora's water froze, and Lake Hylia dried up. But Link fixed all of that, and eventual defeated Ganon. He had the help of his fairy Navi throughout the event, thus making the Legendary Hero.” Link was amazed at the story. “Wow, Grandma. What happened to him after his quest?” “Well,” Grandma said, “no one is for sure, but I think he went on to his own business. There has been a return of the hero every hundred years they say, but those stories can wait for another time. It has been that long, and there has been a strange wind lately. I'm not sure it's evil, but I know it can't mean good things in the future. Maybe the Hero will return.” “Grandma, what happened to Hyrule?” “People believe that is in the ocean below us. They say it became an ocean, and the mountaintops that didn't get swallowed by the water are now our islands. I'll bet you fifty rupees that the Forsaken Fortress is Ganondorf's old roost.” Link's grandma smiled at her joke, and then looked at the family shield. “Link, I want to give you some gifts now.” Grandma pulled out a green outfit from behind her, and handed it to Link. “This is the type of clothing that the Hero of Time wore. When boys become of age, they wear this for a day, to commemorate the Hero of Time.” Link put on the outfit, which was a bit itchy and uncomfortable. “And I want you to have the family shield.” Grandma said. “Now, why don't you go outside and play with you sister Aryll?”
