Chapter 1 - Jeannette Rankin

Chapter 1 - Jeannette Rankin
Jeannette Rankin did a few great things in her lifetime. She was an inspiration to women. Her beliefs, time in congress, and how she affected our country are very important.
She credited her home state for most of her beliefs. She was a pacifist yet unlike others she did not have an Eastern Quaker background. She believed that "peace is a woman's job". The fact that Montana had given women equal rights made her running for national office before the passage of the 19th amendment possible. She always voted against war unfortunately this cost her a second term in 1918. She was the only member in congress to vote against the declaration of war on Japan. Her time in congress affected the whole country. Views toward women changed. Jeannette encouraged women to do the things men usually do.
She changed the whole country. She helped women gain equality.
