Oh yes I've used smudging before, and sad to say I've gotten a little rusty at it. Now you mentioned something about using a lot of the same tones, could you be more specific?

Ok, Tones: Having a bigger range of values and making the picture seem more three dimensional, and not appearing flat and grey. Try to imagine having your picture having an artificial light source. Like if you did a simple drawing of a circle and you wanted it to look round as a ball you would have heavy shading on one side and gradually lighten it as you reach the other side as if light was facing on one side of the circle. Or if you shaded the same circle in one shade of grey it would look like a flat grey pancake with no evident light source. Does that help? It take time to figure out what goes where, it all comes with practice, and sad to say I have not done a lot of that... but I hope that helps you out.

Oh now I know what you'r talking about, yeah I've done that before. It's just been a long time since I've used shading like that. I'm hoping to rekindle those skills when I take drawing classes this year. Well thanks for all your advice! I really appreciate it!
