miriamartisthey! i just love your bleach art. i wanted to ask you what you use for the bleach? do you use regular paint brushes or something else? i kinda wanna try this bleach thing cuz me sweater got bleached by the sun.

Giston on June 9, 2009, 1:01:13 AM

Giston on
GistonYou can household laundry bleach, any kind. I use regular paint brushes, although the synthetic type (I think the bleach corrodes natural hair brushes).

GistonI wouldn't be too sure that you don't already have my talent, so don't go rushing to do anything reckless for it.

Dark_Alchemist on
Dark_AlchemistDo you have to dilute the bleach or do anything to the finished art to keep the fabric from deteriorating? I got bleach on a shirt once by accident and it made a hole.

Giston on July 24, 2007, 4:55:00 PM

Giston on
GistonYeah, I always dilute the bleach. Probably about 5 to 10 parts water to bleach, depending on the picture and how resilient the shirt is. But the best way to keep a shirt from tearing is to keep a fairly dry brush. If you have a lot of bleach in your brush, it will seep through the shirt and make the material quite weak even when dilute. Ideally, the bleach should never get through to the inside of the shirt. You'll know it's right if, when you turn the shirt inside out, there's nothing to see (although that doesn't often happen). You'd probably find that dilution and a dry brush make it generally easier to control the bleach and get more detail as well.

ARCHERcathi dude your art is amazing!! how do you get the bleach colored like that?! srry for all the questions its just youre a really amazing artist!!!!!

Giston on July 22, 2007, 7:39:45 PM

Giston on
GistonThe colour is no great secret, although I wish it was. All the yellows and oranges and whites come straight from the bleach. It's just that different fabrics go different colours when bleached, which I think is pretty exciting. For the ones that have red in them as well I simply use a red marker. It comes out a bit in the wash, but I don't mind wearing a little pink. And don't mind asking questions, I can't often get people interested in bleach!

1acegolfer1OMG your are amazing! I can barely draw on paper let alone bleach incredible pics on clothes XD wow u rock

Giston on January 6, 2008, 7:18:56 AM

Giston on
GistonI wouldn't worry about that. In many ways it's easier to bleach on clothes than to draw on paper.

Dark_Angel_Of_Light on
Dark_Angel_Of_LightHow long does it take for you to bleach the shirts/cloth?

Giston on May 3, 2007, 10:27:29 AM

Giston on
GistonDepends on how detailed and big the picture is I guess. Most of the ones on here probably took on average 6-7 hours. I'm trying to get quicker though.

marschiboiuuuh thats cool. but how does it work with the colors O_o i admire you for this paintbrush work :D

Giston on April 28, 2007, 9:30:45 AM

Giston on
GistonIt goes yellow or maybe orangish from the bleach, depending on the fabric. Give it a go. I colour in the red bits with a marker.

marschiboi on April 27, 2007, 7:52:03 PM

marschiboi on
marschiboiwow you got some amazing stuff in your galery! how do you do this bleach thing?! its awsome! and where do you do it on, dyou have curtains with all these faces on them?
anyway its just totally cool keep it up will you :p

Giston on April 27, 2007, 10:46:19 PM

Giston on
GistonCurtains? I never thought of that actually. Good idea though. Most of these are on shorts and shirts, it's just laundry bleach applied with a paintbrush.
