Huge, genetically engineered warrior caste bread by the creators of the human race, called the protoculture (I believe). They are completely meant for combat, bred to do just that. The genetical modifications include them being 8 meters tall (27 feet). Their body armor is more than battle tank armor due to the sheer size alone.

The Zentradi caste turned on their creators a long, long time ago and fought long wars with the supervision army, the normal military force of the protoculture.

I'm especially pleased with this one as it didn't take more than about 5 hours. I was going to have it be a speedish paint at first, then I thought "what the hell, make it more detailed and scenic" and was starting to add a background, but commissions interrupted me and I was just going to scrap it. Instead now, I made it more like a Zentradi themed simple poster. Probably the best result I've gotten in such a short time.

This isn't entirely photoshop CS, I also made use of a 3d program called Poser 5. I simply generated a (normally dressed) man character in this pose that I wanted, then painted straight over him. Cheap but effective :D

Keep in mind that this is the state it was in before, without any polish (just yanked out of WIP), with some poster elements added and posted. Not exactly a polished work. But I think it's good enough not to be in scraps despite all the (hopefully not too apparent) flaws.Warhammer 40,000: Eldar Alaitoc Pathfinder by mikkowurn:uuid:46addfe0-0ba1-6070-dbf7-939d852c5ada2005-09-01T10:43:19-07:00A commission for Sabertooth Games (Games Workshop) for the Dark Millenium kickass Collectible Card Game. Photoshop CS. I had very little time to do this one (not much sleep) but I came through. The background is more or less a hack - it's partially traced + referenced from a real jungle photo with some fog added for measure. The character's pose is loosely referenced from a photo of a US Marine in the water (loosely). The hands were referenced from individual photos of hands holding rifles.. The face is referenced from an old Games Workshop eldar art piece.

The water was loads of fun, I want to do more of that. :)

This actual version I worked on for maybe 8 hours. I needed more time. The art director did specify that my first draft looked too photorealistic, so I treated it a bit in Painter IX to make it look more painted.
Space Marine "Blood Ravens" strike cruiser, in orbit.
Planetoid and space painted in painter IX. Ships in Photoshop CS. I think it took about 8-10 hours.
Used a photo of a miniature model as reference for the ship. General satellite images for rough/sort of reference for the planetoid.

Took about 5 hours to do. Semi referenced the angle, everything else eyeballed (i.e. I did it from my mind). Very difficult to work with since I had almost no research material at all, just one undetailed photo. You don't want to be the GW artist that makes people go "BOO, inconsistencies in the art": :P

All done in Photoshop CS. The stars were really easy to make, I just painted 4-5 of the large ones, then downsized, a lot of copying and pasting, mixing in layers and some airbrushing.
I was trying to learn Painter 7 and using my tablet, and was very nervous. I didn't expect much at all and I was so happy with the result.
Note that I, cleverly enough at that time, used a photo of a miniature and almost completely referenced it. Pose, skull, ground, etc. The only thing that is original is some of the Blood Angels logos and the paint scheme - I like the Blood Angels and made it such.
It took about 20+ hours back in the day (early 2003). Fanart such as these eventually got Games Workshop into hiring me for doing art for them, so I can't say it was wasted at all :)

Not much to tell. Photoshop CS, 15 hours. I'm very pleased with it :) No references used, although plenty of study materials on how land raiders, marines and the logos should look like.

Space Marines from the Blood Angels chapter decapitate some of the Orc's heads up on sharp sticks as a display of their ruthlessness and abilities. But also to scare whatever is left of the Orc's by sheer terror.
This Warhammer 40,000 painting displays a decapitated Orc-head on a sharp stick, and a Blood Angels Space Marine (who just put the head there) taking a look at his victim.
Photoshop 7 using mainly the airbrush. ~ 7 hours. No references used (though I did go through some images of Space Marines and Orcs to get an idea how they look like).

The chapter was lead by Primarch Horus, the figure most noteworthy for turning on the emperor and leading a revolt. The chapter first was renamed to Sons of Horus. Then after Horus was slain, the chapter repainted themselves black and took the name "Black Legion".
No references used. Some research material on the Luna Wolves logo and paint scheme was kindly provided by ~ Kedeawyth. Painted in Photoshop 7 and CS. How much time I don't know, as most of the time consuming parts were discarded. Perhaps 6-7 hours on what is actually showing.
This was originally a scrap from over a year ago. Nothing much changed. I became sick of it, simply. So there seems to be little purpose to the scene. Originally, Horus or Abaddon (The chapter captain) would have been on the podium giving some speech or similar, but alas, not this time.
The best bit was the last - adding wheathering and other little details. You should see it very clearly in full screen mode if nothing else. I agreed with the previous critique, the armors looked too clean and fresh. No more.

It is destined to be a collectible game card in the "Dark Millenium" Warhammer 40,000 game.
It's finally done. It was an interesting ride painting this. I suffered through a terrible flu early on in the process, then I had some surgery (very minor, skin only :P) which was distracting. But here it is. Through the process, I was suddenly asked to change it from the initial Space Wolves to Dark Angels. Then when it was nearing completion (or so I thought) it turns out a misunderstanding made me paint the wrong type of Land Raider design. I suppose it was fair to say the painting was no more than half done at the time. And thus I had to get back into it and redo most things. However, under some guidance from the amazing art director, the composition of the image became a lot more interesting. Ruins, rubble, Land Speeders (yes, they can actually fly more than 3 meters over the ground in some situations).
The ground and the sky incorporate parts from real photos, thus this is classified as a 'matte' painting. Everything else is completely hand painted in Photoshop 7, however. With all the repaints, it probably took upwards 16-17 hours to do. Blah eh? I want to get that number way down for future ones.
If anything, I think the angle is rather bland. So 'typical'. I'm going to try and be creative in the future.
I hope it brings you a deep sense of gothical warfare watching it.

Paint Shop Pro for ~3 hours for the rest.
Staring and thinking what would look better ~4 hours (at least)
Procastrination ~no limit - took 1½ month from start to finish with long periods of inactivity.
References: The pose was referenced from episode 24 of "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". A quite crummy rip of it to be exact.
What you see is how I imagine the box-art of a plastic assembly model (scale 1:72, heh heh)of a MSDF 303 Armored Suit might look like (as far as I am aware, there are no such models on sale yet). I started out with just the mech, but then someone said "it looks like a model box art", I got the idea to make it look like such, complete with Japanese descriptions.
The unit itself originates from my favourite TV show, the anime "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". It has two pair of arms because the smaller pair belong to the pilot. The mecha arms merely mimic the movement of the pilot arms perfectly, making it very maneuverable and easy to manipulate the surroundings. The legs are straddled into the thighs. The suit itself has two knee-joints, and is essentially a chicken-walker.
Production was initiated in 2030 and it was developed by the (what is now) Japanese Marine Corps own development contractors, MSDF. The unit is intended for urban combat as it is too slow, immobile and large to deal with outdoor terrain combat. Despite it's tall height of 3,9 meters when standing fully extended, it can crouch down to 2,5 meters, enough to squeeze into many buildings, corridors, industrialized areas, etc.
The armor is APC like in strength, and is thus strong enough to deflect small-arms fire up to large bore armor-piercing bullets. Realistically, one needs anti-tank weaponry to disable a MSDF 303 quickly.
The suit has camera/sensor clusters in multiple places, including the wrists, back, thighs, shoulders and knees, giving it an enormous level of awareness of its surroundings. The knee-cameras will even allow the pilot to see what he is stepping on - literally! The pilot interfaces with the machine through his cyberbrain connection, and it is through that which the camera images are displayed to the pilot.
The pilot hands remain the achilles heel of the unit - direct hits can seriously injure them. A newer, heavier version exists with shielding over the hands, but at the expense of being more cumbersome and less dexterious to handle.
This is Mai Shibamura, the not so sociable (main) character from GunParade March. The show being just 12 episodes x 20 minutes long ( = 4 hours), I saw the whole thing in one morning and it made a strong impression.

I had very different ideas at first of what it was going to be. Her slouching when sitting down on a bench or chair, with perhaps Taka (the womanizer) leaning over her babbling, and her ignoring him. Or her sitting on a sunchair under a parasol on a sunny hot runway with heatstreaks, drinking that Sweet Rice Drink as they call it in the TV series. Then I was going to sneak in some dropships from the show, and tried two differently sketched versions, one behind and one above, but neither worked with the picture.

The horizon became quite surreal looking. Maybe it's a snowy landscape, maybe it is above the clouds.. Who knows :) At one point, I spent 1-2 hours painting the face, only to realize I had completely screwed it up and had to revert to the older version.
