for more realistic drawings, ie: doing a real life portrait of someone where you don't want outlines to show you have a seperate sheet of paper that you can rub a lead pencil (#2 is best) pretty hard so it leaves a little puddle and then you can rub the tortillon point in it and shade without actually touching a pencil to your drawing. that makes the edges really soft. or you can do like i do on these drawings and shade on the picture with a pencil then smooth it out with the tortillon and an eraser (for highlights) Try not the touch the tip cause the oil from your fingers will ruin it (the lead won't flow as freely).
