Yeah, it's one of the two kana in japan, the other being hiragana. Katakana is used for stuff like foreign words and sound effects, which I can't help but notice you've written backwards. :P

Nice work! I must say that the comic is very well-drawn. I see that you've decided to use handwriting rather than regular computer lettering. BTW, In my country long hair isn't a reason for bullying - they are just percieved as something cool.
