Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Guarding the Master Emerald; this was Knuckles the Echidna's life. No real friends, just two rivals- Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Eggman, who's made a fool of Knuckles for the last time, and Rouge the Bat, who tried to steal the Master Emerald many times. But not anymore. Knuckles and her were yelling at each other at what seemed like yesterday...

Flashback...

"THAT'S IT KNUCKLES! I'M DONE!" screamed Rouge.
"WITH WHAT?!" asked Knuckles, yelling.
"ONE, STEALING THAT FRECKING MASTER EMERALD," answered Rouge.
"WHAT'S NUMBER TWO?!" asked Knuckles. Rouge stared panting, and Knuckles saw tears come to her eyes. Knuckles gasped.
"With you, Knuckles. With you," answered Rouge, the tears falling rapidly from her eyes.
"With me? What does she mean by that?" thought Knuckles.
"Rouge...," Rouge flew off.
"ROUGE!" Knuckles yelled after her.

End of flashback...

"It's been one hundred days since that...and I dream about that every night. Why WAS I counting the days anyway? That bat means NOTHING to me!"

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face

"I lied to myself yet again. Wait...why did that song pop in my head? And...Rouge's face isn't pretty! It's beautiful...WHAT DID I JUST THINK?!"

A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same

"I've always been cold...haven't I?"

But all the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreaming of your face

"Why do I dream of you?" Knuckles whispered.

I'm here without you baby

"So what? It means NOTHING!"

Knuckles sighed. Why was this song tormenting him?

The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go, oh yeah yeah

Knuckles felt tears in the corners off his eyes. He blinked a couple of times. Knuckles the Echidna was NOT going to cry!

Tears snuck up on Knuckles again, but this time, they forced themselves to go down.
"DANG! NO!" Then, an eerie glow came from the Master Emerald. Tikal came out.
"Knuckles," Knuckles turned, startled.
"Uh, hi, Tikal," He blushed from embarrassment.
"You understand I MADE that song go through your hard head, right?" asked Tikal.
"WHY?!" asked Knuckles.
"You love Rouge, Knuckles. Don't deny it," answered Tikal.
"Why would I ever love that...that...that bat?!" asked Knuckles.
"You're crying," Tikal pointed out.
"Tikal, I don't love her because I barely even know what love is!" exclaimed Knuckles.
"If your stomach turns, you blush, feel nervous around her, act like you can't stand her, help her when she needs it, AND CRY IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED, you love her," explained Tikal. Knuckles started to sweat. He's had ALL of those symptoms.
"Thanks, Tikal," There was sarcasm in his voice, though he half meant it. Tikal sighed.
"Men...," She disappeared. Knuckles looked up into the night sky. A shooting star passed by.
"My wishes never come true. Why should I trust a star this time?" He went to sleep, tears staining his eyes and staying on his cheeks.
