Chapter 21 - The retreat

Kishin Oni had finally achieved what no one before her as ever been able to achieve before; kill Shinigami.[br]
Above the smouldering devastation that is Death City, Oni stood triumphantly on the rooftop of Shibusen holding her winners prize; the Soul of the almighty God of Death.[br]
“I’ve done it? I’ve done it! I beat the God of Death! Now there is no one left who can match me.” Oni cheered holding the soul of the Death God up in the air as a sign of victory “Now all that is left is to absorb his soul and all of his power will be mine”[br]
[br]
Below her, within Death City, every Meister and Weapon looked up to see the epic battle between her and Shinigami. But now they wished they hadn’t, cause now all they can see is their beloved master, teacher, friend and to some a fatherly figure reduced to a mere soul, helpless and weak.[br]
“This can’t be…. No…. this is a dream right? No one can kill Shinigami-sama” These were the words the were quickly spreading throughout Death City as the onlookers watched as Oni began to absorb the Soul of the God of Death[br]
[br]
Oni’s absorption technique was very much different to the norm. Instead of literally eat a person’s soul, she broke Shinigami’s soul into smaller fragments and disrupted these fragments around her body and upon contact, the fragment were slowly drawn into Oni..[br]
Almost immediately after Oni absorbed Shinigami’s soul the already dark red sky turned into a deep jet-black but with a haunting blue aura surrounding the clouds. It was not only the sky that changed, Oni herself started wailing from some sort of pain. It didn’t take long for everyone to realise that the painful wail was actually the pain of transformation into a new entity.[br]
[br]
“We have to get out of here” Stein pleaded “We have to leave before she finishes becoming… whatever she is becoming”[br]
No one moved. The trauma of losing Shinigami was still too strong, but there were some among the group of survivors that saw the danger they were in and started knocking some sense into the many shell-shocked people.[br]
“Sid go look for Soul and Maka, I fear for their well being” Stein ordered[br]
“Of course, they fought Oni before Shinigami-sama so they must be in bad shape” Sid replied after knocking over some Lost Souls “Asuza! Can you detect where they are?”[br]
Asuza nodded “Yes Maka is in the Death corridor but somehow Soul is at the main door of Shibusen. Their soul wavelengths are very weak but they are still alive”[br]
“Good, okay Sid you know where they are, now hurry, me and Asuza will try and rescue as many other as we can, we’ll try to link up with the other Death Scythes and Meisters so we can formulate an escape strategy” Directed Stein[br]
“Understood” Sid said as he use his zombie digging ability to reach Soul and Maka respectively[br]
This is indeed a dark day for Shibusen but we can’t sit around just yet, there is a time for mourning but it is not now Stein thought as he helped to organise a retreat plan.[br]
[br]
Oni’s transformation seemed to be moving in stages. Currently she was on stage one; where her mind, body and soul suddenly fell an influx of power and all three powers were trying to contain and control the power boost. The reason for the sky turning black was most likely due to the mass of negative energy the Oni was producing from her transformation.[br]
Suddenly without warning a dark mist surrounded Oni, it seemed to envelop her like a shroud. As the mist surrounded her, it began to thicken to the point that it was impossible to see through it. In actual fact the mist was turning into more of a solid shell to surround Oni for her next transformation stage. As the mist turned into a solid shell, the heavens let loose thunder and lighting that zoomed across the sky and crashing into the earth, not only that but Oni’s transformation shell had what looked like lightning flurrying around it.[br]
[br]
People who stopped to look at Oni where getting more and more afraid of what was going to emerge from the shell and increased the pace of their rescue/escape operations. Thankfully for them, it seemed that the Lost Souls had stopped attacking and where all looking up to Oni like a dog waiting for his master to arrive or tell it to do something. Stein and the other Shibusen staff took full advantage of the Lost Soul somewhat dormant state by evacuating people to the escape zone at the very far edge of Death city, where a couple of large people carriers awaited.[br]
[br]
Within the Death corridor, Sid finally found Maka out cold on the floor. Instinctively he went to check her vital signs and discovered that she was very close to death.[br]
This is bad. I better get her out of here and to a doctor before she gets any worse Sid thought as he picked up Maka and placed her on his shoulders Now time to find your weapon partner[br]
Sid again used his zombie digging ability and dug his way to where Soul was supposed location.[br]
It took a little longer to reach Soul was Sid had to contend with the gravely injured Maka on his shoulder but he managed to get to Soul.[br]
“Hey Soul are you alright?” he asked[br]
Soul was no longer in his weapon form by this point but that didn’t equal that he was coherent. You’re out of it too huh? Well it looks like I’ve got to carry the two of you on my back for a while[br]
Just like with Maka, Sid placed Soul on his other shoulder and again used his zombie digging ability to reach the escape zone in Death City.[br]
[br]
At the escape zone Stein and Marie were directing everyone into the large people carriers. It was a difficult job as people where wanting to go back to the city to get personnel belonging and try and find their missing friends or family, to make maters worse some of Shibusen’s student were more inclined to attack Oni out of revenge then help safe guard the residence of Death City.[br]
But somehow as the chaos in Death City slowly died down – not including Oni’s lethal lightning storm above – the people began to calm down, as they were herded into the people carriers.[br]
[br]
Just when the last of the people carriers were finishing boarding, Sid appeared with Soul and Maka on his shoulders[br]
“Thank the heavens I made it” Sid panted[br]
“How are they?” Stein asked concerned[br]
“They’re both pretty out of it but I think Soul is better off. I think you should tend to Maka first Stein she is too close to death for my liking”[br]
“Got it. Marie you carry Maka I’ll carry Soul into the carrier”[br]
“Right” Marie nodded[br]
Sid let Stein and Marie take Make and Soul of his shoulders and the group proceeded to board the remaining carrier, but just as they did so the ground shook violently.[br]
“Is it an earthquake?” Marie screamed[br]
“No worse. It’s Oni! She’s reawakening” Stein answered looking back at Death City[br]
“Come on you two we don’t have time to stand around! Let’s get out of here before she finishes transforming” Sid pleaded as he tried to get the other to move.[br]
Stein and Marie didn’t say anything; they just acted and went inside the carrier.[br]
“Pilot get this thing in the air now!” Sid ordered, as he was the last to get in[br]
“No need to tell me twice, we are out of here” the pilot replied as he started the engines of the carrier and got the vehicle in the air. The other carriers soon followed suit and got in the air to escape the danger.[br]
[br]
On board the carriers people who were able looked through the windows and watched as Oni’s transformation shell cracked and exploded open.[br]
What they saw both surprised and sent fear into their hearts.[br]
