Chapter 1 - Tougher than Me
11/09/06
I stood before the open window.
The arctic air hit my bare flesh
like a thousand needles fired from
a cannon.
The sound of leaves scratching pavement
played in the air, surfing on invisible
waves till they retired in my ear.
The air was drenched with the aroma
of dead and dying leaves, of minuscule
water droplets, of rich fertile earth, of
life.
I gazed, in a state of chilled serenity.
It was as if nothing mattered. All efforts
futile. Much like the trees I felt, thrusting
their naked claws to the sky so that they
may embrace the stars and drink the
milk of the moon.
But the stars know they are out of reach
and they stare smugly, cackling at
the naive branches.
For they will never meet
and receive only a watery substitute for the lunar nectar they crave.
But unlike me, they are strong.
Laughing at the wind that tries so
desperately to detach them from home.
That wind that I can just barely bare as it caresses my skin with an
unkind hand.
I wish I had the strength of the trees. Then I could always
continue to reach towards the
light, never concerned about
whether or not I could bathe
in its source or touch its brethren.
Then maybe I too could chuckle
at the wind when brushed by
its cruel finger.
