Folks: Just because you use the internet does not mean you should forget how to use your manners.

We must first establish that art is purely subjective. You are, therefore, allowed to have your own opinion of people's work. You can hate something, you can love something. That is your view and you are more than welcome to keep that view. Trust me, it’s yours. No one can take it from you. However, a problem emerges when the manner in which you express your opinion is inadequate, irrational, or rude.

Commenting on a picture by just saying, “No.” clearly exemplifies all three categories listed above describing a “bad critique”.

When someone is looking for a critique, that person wants to be told explicitly what corrections to make in order to improve the quality of their work.
By just saying, “no” (or any other single minded phrases of that sort) the artist has learned absolutely NOTHING that they could possibly benefit from.
And, under no circumstances should one assume the artist knows what’s wrong with a picture through a one word comment.

Therefore, without the clarification of a one word negative comment/critique the commenter can be considered inexcusably rude. Most people do not realize, but there is a right way and a wrong way to critiquing someone’s work.

A Good Comment/Critique
“I like how you drew the mouth…however, perhaps you could blend the colors around the lips better.”

“Overall you picture is okay. Next time though, I would suggest studying more closely how to shade around the eyes.”

“The anatomy of the person is pretty good, but perhaps a few improvements could be made to the clothing folds you drew (maybe add more shadows, they look kinda flat)?”

A Bad Comment/Critique
“Ew.”
“Pointless.’
“I don’t like it.”
“No.”

See the difference…

Now, you may ask, what are the benefits to giving a good critique?:
-You don’t get labeled as a flamer
-People will take you more seriously
-There is more respect for your opinion
-And you don’t piss off college students who at 12:30 in the morning have nothing better to do than rant (especially when they are already cranky because their floor, the "quiet floor", is not actually quiet.

:)

If you ever get the chance to go to Japan, go! It is one of the most interesting places you'll ever visit. I know; I've been there. And I can't wait to go back. I'm going to be studying a year abroad during my junior year of college. I'm already counting down. I've been thinking though, I'm not sure how I'm going to pack everything into one suitcase. At least I have a couple years to ponder that pickle.

DragonicFlamesYour style remind me a lot of another artist on the site. Though he's moved over to DA because the site at the time wasn't a "professional" looking on...

SunnithI'm pretty sure his name was VR_Jay, maybe just with an underscore in there. I searched it. I can see where are style are similar, especially with the cell style shading.
