Because Square-Enix needed a villian for FFX that would make Sephiroth look about as terrifying as a Mog. Because Square-Enix loves to create amazing story-lines in the FF games, and then make the fans cry by killing off characters like Aeris and Tidus. And because Square-Enix were being stupid when the designed FFX-2 so you could only play as Y/P/R, and not as my favorite male character in FFX.
