The theme was anime, so I had to pick a fanart piece.
Zaraki is easily my favorite Bleach captain. I like his philosophy very much. I thought of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 while doing this piece. It's the one almost every cartoon likes to use. If you haven't heard it already, you should; it's insane in a good way. You can find it on Youtube. The Friska is the last part of the song, that's the most exciting and the best. But it's also not easy to play.

This time, it was an RPG theme. It sounds generic though, but then I decided to draw FuSoYa because there aren't a lot of pictures of him.
I also decided to make his clothes more detailed.

I figured I'd use one of her favorite characters. Since the tutorial image is rather large, and probably won't fit within the guidelines here, I'll just link it from the other site.
This is from another old and not well-known SNES game. I also decided to add Gaia in the background because the red on its own was too bright.

The idea is (if you choose to do this elsewhere) try to remember exactly how someone or something looks as you see them and draw them from memory. I came up with this idea because I was sitting at this restaurant without any pencils or paper and saw a good looking guy. I think the drawing looks fairly close.
I later added that poem in German. My knowledge of German grammar is kaputt though; I needed some help.
The English says:
I met a man,
His hair was blond and fine,
I know another man,
Whose hair was blond and fine,
I met a man,
His eyes were dazzlingly blue,
I know another man,
Whose searching eyes were blue,
I met a man,
He is not someone I know,
I know another man,
Who is someone I know,
I met a man,
His face was fair and handsome,
I know another man,
Whose expression was as fair and as great as his mind,
I met a man,
Why does it matter that I know what he looks like,
When I know another man, who looks the same, yet who does not compare to this man,
When the man that I know was more intelligent than any other man that I know?]]>Sideburns! by AngelusMortisurn:uuid:49ea583f-4d93-d601-dfe8-74aa39659a122008-09-20T10:15:03-07:00I don't entirely know why I drew this; I think I was bored. This sketch was done directly off a copy of the Jensen painting, but I can't remember whose copy it was--all I know is that the original was drawn by Jensen. But because I liked this sketch so much, it ended up going all over the design for this event and on some avatars and other graphics.
I have once again written another of Gauss' insightful words in Latin, "Regina scientiae est mathematica, ac regina mathematicae est arithmetica."--"Mathematics is the queen of science, and arithmetic, the queen of mathematics."
This is the original sketch. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/btl/Gauss_J_sketch.jpg]]>IICIIIXI Anniversary Dedication to Carl Friedrich Gauss by AngelusMortisurn:uuid:c2627b8d-565a-1ba3-897c-bd2a2a8abc352008-04-30T08:22:30-07:00Admittedly, Carl Friedrich Gauss is still my hero. So, in commemoration of the 231st anniversary of his birthday, I've drawn this sketch of him, and one of my favorite quotes said by him, which I wrote in Latin. It says: "Si ceteri vera mathematica meditentur ut penitus ac perpetuo meditatus sim, mea inventa faciant." In English, "If others would reflect upon mathematical truths as deeply and continuously as I have, they would make my discoveries." I've written the dedication in Latin because Gauss commonly wrote his publications and probably most of his math journals in Latin.
I know he looks kind of sad in this drawing, but his life was kind of sad in a way. His wife died after his third child was born; five years after he married her, his main supporter, Duke Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand also died, he made few personal friends, due to the high level of his genius and isolation, and some enemies, due to the fact that he would not acknowledge their work, claiming it was his own (his journal and posthumous papers revealed this had been true), suffered hypochondria and melancholia, particularly in his later life, and was ill for most of his later life. And yet, none of these things stopped him from being the magnificent man that he was, the kind, gentle and calm being of great genius, who disliked conflict and did not preach religious intolerance, and perhaps sensitive, yet strong in spirit and intellect.
For those interested, Gauss' name in Latin (nominative) is Carolus Fredericus Gauss.]]>Newton by AngelusMortisurn:uuid:6c391757-85c5-29e4-7106-22bd45e0051a2008-04-19T02:33:28-07:001642 - 1727

One of three greatest mathematicians in history. The reference picture I used for this got cut off at the top, so I couldn't see the rest of his hat. For those less familiar with the Greeks, legend has it that Archimedes was the guy who ran streaking naked out of a bathhouse and through the streets shouting "Eureka!" at the top of his lungs.

Actually though, I drew it because I've never drawn Sephiroth like this before.
I should probably also make another note about the background picture, even though I've tweaked it a little, and I got it from someone else's website with 3D stuff on it, and I think there was a notice about using stuff from it, probably having to do with giving credit to the person who made it, but unfortunately, I can't remember what the URL of that website is, so if you somehow recognize the picture that I used and know who made it, please let me know so I can give whoever drew it the proper credentials.]]>Princeps Mathematicorum by AngelusMortisurn:uuid:7ccbe538-0d01-341c-d938-2d349ff2e5b92008-02-16T08:48:29-08:00Okay, so I'm a total geek for posting this, but...
The Latin title means "Prince of Mathematicians", although I've heard it as "Prince of Mathematics", so I'm not sure which one it is. If it were the latter though, I think it would be "Princeps Mathematicarum" instead.
I realize this isn't entirely much like all the other stuff I draw, and the subject matter is certainly not the most attractive (I know lots of you dislike, and even hate math)--however, I will say it's the best portrait of real life people I've done so far. Ever. For those less mathematically inclined, this is a portrait of one of the three greatest mathematicians in history, Karl Friedrich Gauss. I won't go into the full details of his biography and write a lengthy essay about it, but in a nutshell, he was a genius, and child prodigy. After reading about his contributions to mathematics and a lengthy (70 pages!) biography about him, I was compelled to draw him, mostly for what he has contributed, but also for the fact that he doesn't discriminate against women, so long as they're proficient at math--in fact, he probably had several pupils and students (mostly male) that didn't meet his standards. Although it's probably not fair to compare someone like Sophie Germain to them. I also admit that I was touched by his humbleness and devotion to mathematics; for he did not want fame or money; he did math because he enjoyed it, and wasn't exactly rich for his entire life, even though he was around people that could afford giving him such luxuries, and his fame was so great that one might have expected him to be rich. I admire people who operate like this.
For those who actually care, the equations in the background are contributions from Gauss, although he's probably made a lot more than that; I just didn't have a way to transform all of the theorems, proofs and other ideas into formulae. You'll also notice that some of them are things taken directly from his math journal that he kept, although most of it is supposed to be incomprehensible to people who have little knowledge of advanced mathematics. I admit I'm not as well versed in mathematics as some people (hey, I'm not a genius), so I don't actually use or understand some of the equations, and were only included to acknowledge what Gauss did. The Latin words in the background are parts taken from his Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, Inquiry of Arithmetics (I knew Latin was good for something), which contains quite a bit of the foundations of number theory that we use today. It's also one of the few things he did get published.
I also admit that I used a painting of Christian Albrecht Jensen's version of Gauss' portrait as reference. It's a really nice piece.
I'm also quite glad I drew this, because the Disquisitiones Arithmeticae and the title, "Prince of Mathematics" appeared on a math history test I was taking, and because I used part of it in this piece, I recognized that Gauss wrote it. If I hadn't drawn this piece, I might not have known that.
I've also just realized this piece contains my three most favorite things: art, Latin and math.
