Traffic is one of the hardest things to get.
You have to advertise any and every where you can.

The trick is to put you sites name in lots of places, and those places have to be some how related to what your site is about.
When you post your link, the rank of your site is boosted in search engines, as long as the sites relate. Your rank is also boosted when you get more users. So ultimately, the more links (ads, etc,) you have the more traffic you can get. Its best to post the links in the high traffic areas of other sites, so forum sigs are a plus. When posting give some info about the site at least a few words.

Once you've set out some links try getting your more devoted users to add you site to their sigs too, it helps to have small sig images and to provide them with the code to use it.

Okay, so now that we have the basics down, you just have to remember these key things, the more users your have the better you are!
And to get more users, you MUST spread the word, in as many relative places as possible.
By doing so, search engines will see more content from you thus relating you, and so on you get more traffic referrals.

Well, I'm not so good at making things look good, I'm the guy that programs stuff.

So I can format all I need to but most of my stylizing and such is done inline, making things a bit difficult for site look updating.

Yeah, Plain old HTML-CSS can get really old.
It gets worse when you build a site an no one comes to it.

There is a lot of competition on the web today. You can find at least two of almost every kind of site. The trick of trade today is to find something new, or to offer more than the other site has ;)
