I was thinking of something along the lines of my Fear mage- but less affecting the minds of people as using light to make illusions everyone can see or bend light in such a way that something can't be seen- a power that might slowly morph into something else

So how do the powers work?

I was thinking something along the lines of- they are attempting to expand their empire but lack skills in teraforming so are forced to attempt to find planets that are suitable for them to live on
Or to take a bit from 'home world destroyed' and 'Sins of a Solar Empire' their solar empire was attacked by something which burned through their worlds- they are running from the other force and simply strip mining words they pass by for resources to survive... I don't know if that makes the story too complicated though
-Might be smart with the whole 'put off 'till later' idea

Might be their experiences dictate whether they stick with their blood or the humans in the eventual war

And it helps to tie it back into the eventual story...
Have you thought up a reason why the aliens want to conquer Earth? 
Hm... Might be nice to have one of the children turn against the humans in the third act

I can tell you some random creations of fear or you can just make one up, and feel free to make one up.

So is there any idea for why there was a sample of the other species DNA or was it like a vanguard scout ship crashed so samples were taken from the remains?

Maybe a nightmare she use to have about a creation of Fear from a story her father use to tell her?

Hm, sounds like a good basic idea. So, would it be that they have a basic use of their powers when they wake up?
I'll give it a thought or two and see what I can think up :)
