The 4th hokage(Naruto's dad) died from sealing the Nine Tailed Fox inside of Naruto and the 3rd hokage took his place and then died from fighting Orochimaru and then the 5th hokage(Tsunada) was put in charge.
And if u don't believe me go to google and type "Naruto(Third Hokage)" and see for your self.
