Joshua is a Boston Brahmin, 13 years old, and former singer for the Boston Boys Choir (until his voice changed). His father died of Spanish influenza in the 1919 epidemic. After this, Joshua must quit school, find a job, and help support his mother, who begins taking in boarders for extra money. Because of their social situation, Joshua’s mother insists that he call the boarders “Uncle” and “Aunt” lest the neighbors learn of their financial plight. Joshua finds a job hawking newspapers for Charlestown Charlie, an Irish immigrant from the North End who is the franchise holder for the “newsies.” Joshua must hide this job from his mother because being a “newsie” would be below his social status. Through his job, Joshua learns how the other half lives and how tough life is on the streets. When Joshua finds himself belonging to neither social group, he decides to set out on his own as a newspaper distributer, even at the risk of upsetting Charlie. Joshua finds himself in a hot spot when a molasses flood roars through the North End destroying the tenements and all that is in its path.
