Well, I got into Japanese originally for work reasons. It went with my martial arts, too. Reading manga got me into it. I found Japanese 101 at college (I'm in my second year, but I'm not taking a full course schedule). It's not too hard to speak, actually. (So far). It's the writing that's a killer. Three alphabets used interchangably...it hurts to think, lol.But, yeah. There's a couple good books out there when it comes to learning. Read and Speak Japanese for Beginners is one. The other is 'Japanese the Manga way'. Both are easy to understand.
