Some win, some lose. All fans of this wacky fanbase will never be happy at once. I'm just glad gameplay is being put a larger emphasis on.
I don't get how anyone would choose story over gameplay in a Sonic game. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just baffling. Most of the stories in his games are pretty lame and cliche, with too much emphasis on the drama aspect. Some people such as yourself enjoy that, so I guess SEGA is doing their job right if they're getting people to buy these games for the multiple aspects people purchase them for whether it be gameplay, story, graphics, music (one aspect I find amazing in literally all Sonic games [except chronicles, that soundtrack was horrid], etc.
From here, I can see SEGA splitting the Sonic franchise into two mainstream series now (if Sonic 4 turns out to be a resounding success). You'll have your run-of-the-mill 3D games (which I think will be coming out by 2011 for Sonic's 20th anniversary [sonic adventure 3 anyone?]), and you'll have a new breed of the classic continuations (Sonic 4, 5, etc). This is a very good thing if you look at if from a step back, because now every aspect of the fanbase can be pleased in one way or another (except for the whiners who won't accept anything no matter what it is [and this goes for both classic and modern fans too]).
Can we at least agree that not hearing Griffith shout "YA-HOO!" after every speed panel or homing attack is a good thing? Haha.

Compared to sh¡t like Shadow the Hedgehog, the Sonic Rush series, and the Storybook series, it's like a godsend (well, Sonic's portions that is).
::On a side note, what are you current thoughts on Sonic 4?::

I heard about these retro games a few years later, and decided to see what they were all about. My first one of them was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and it was like nothing I've ever played before (probably why it's one of my top 3 favorite games ever). I still to this day enjoy the Adventure series, but I think the era of 3D Sonic started dying to me around Sonic & The Black Knight. It wasn't a bad game by itself, it was actually quite good for what it was, but it just wasn't a Sonic game.
But what do I know, I'm also the same guy who thinks Sonic 2K6 is the closest thing we've gotten to a Sonic Adventure 3 in which I actually enjoyed that game for it's gameplay [not so much everything else]).
tl;dr: I like both old-school and modern Sonic games, but I still prefer the classic game more.
