And I don't really watch One Piece: I never found it that interesting. There are too many tangents that cause the series to stray from its main goal, and it doesn't ever seem to progress.

No, it didn't offend me. I could argue that Itachi is actually one of the more modest characters, since he doesn't seem to flaunt his power, nor does he really seem to thirst for it.

So far he hasn't died, but in the manga it's reaching a point where that possibility exists.

Destroyed his clan, murdered his parents, left Sasuke to, supposedly, surpass and kill him, joined Akatsuki, and with any one of those you never really know what his true intentions are.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to respond. I know it's been a while since I was last here, but a close family member died; one that I truly cherished.

To answer your question: Kakashi used to be an ANBU (that organization working in the Leaf Village to protect it; they wear the white animal masks). He was an ANBU before the show started apparently, and dis-joined to become a regular Jounin.

He's not gone from the show. I don't know if you watch the subbed version of Naruto Shippuuden or not, but Itachi DOES come back. He's a major character in the story, and becomes a center focal point in upcoming parts of the series.
