Glad you liked it ^^ Unfortunately, that was all I had planned to write. It was originally going to be in our co-op fic, but it got too big so I decided to just flesh out the rest of it into a long one-shot. I loved the schrodinger's cat as a concept for an episode ever since I read about the experiment. And the alternate reality thing was fun, too.

I think it would be fun to work an alternate reality into our co-op. Speaking of, I really need to get back to work on that. xD I'm sorry to report that I've been most neglectful in my duties.

It's okay ^^ Sorry I wasn't on last night. My internet simply refused to work, for some reason. It's all good now, despite everything I tried last night failing miserably. Huh. Oh well.

Well, when you get on tomorrow, I have a little surprise for you to cheer you up. :) I was catching up on Shippuden, and for some reason this idea just kind of slapped me in the face, and I had to pause my episode to write it down. Let me know what you think.


Hisako gingerly placed her fingertips over the puncture marks of Kisame’s shark-like fangs, a disbelieving look claiming her face. When had he gotten past her defenses? She staggered back as Kisame did the same; any who saw the scene would have thought they were mirroring each other. His tattered Akatsuki cloak flapped in the wind, and her long brown hair whipped about her scratched and bruised face. Her lips parted to form a question when her skin began to tingle. Self satisfaction twisted the swordsman’s lips up in a menacing smirk, even as Hisako’s skin began to itch and burn like nothing she’d ever felt. At first it was just a nuisance, like a mosquito bite, but it escalated until the pain brought bursts of white light to her eyes. The sides of her neck began to ache, and then a searing pain like razor-sharp claws being dragged across her jugular began. A strangled moan began in the back of her throat, and before long it was a devastating shriek that had Kisame covering his ears with a wince. Her skin split apart in three places on each side of her neck, about three inches long, and she dragged her fingertips along the edge of them, only to jerk her hand away as if she’d been burned. She tossed a helpless look at Kisame, whose grin widened to reveal his sharp teeth.

“Take a look at yourself,” he called to her, rolling back on his haunches. Hisako held a shaking hand to her face- and gasped. Her skin was slowly shifting from a healthy peach to a sallow grey, and then a light blue, only a few shades darker than Kisame. Scales were beginning to emerge in several places, shimmering iridescent blue, catching the forest light magnificently. Very small, translucent webs began to form between each finger, and her fingernails elongated before her eyes into sharp, deadly nails. Her tongue snaked across her dry lips, and she winced as it snagged on her now sharp fangs, bringing blood to her mouth. Out of nowhere, a searing pain lanced up her spine, bringing her to her knees. She knew without having to look that her spine was elongating, each vertebrae becoming more pronounced against her brilliant blue skin. Her hair blew across her face, and if she could have, she would have gasped- it was now a dark, stormy blue, rather than the russet that it had previously been.

“What… what have you done to me?” She half-screamed, her fingers clawing at the dirt in pain and frustration.

“I’ve showed you your inheritance. The genetic lock is broken.” Kisame stood, and Hisako tensed. He cupped his hands together, blew into them, and threw his hands skyward- water that hadn’t been there before showered around them both, gathering in front of her in the shape of a mirror. She looked at herself and shook her head in disbelief. Her icy blue eyes stared back at her, seemingly colder than before. She looked… well, she looked like Kisame. More glorious, somehow. Noble.

“I don’t understand,” Hisako whispered, her strength slowly returning. With shaking hands she slowly pushed herself to her feet, unable to tear her eyes away from the mirror. It disentigrated in front of her, the water slowly spreading over the forest floor to nourish the ground.

“Of course you do,” Kisame replied in a placating, if not condescending, voice. “You never wondered why no one noticed you? You never felt that you were born for so much more than being a shadow?” Venom laced his voice now, and she met his eyes. “You never wondered who your father was? Why you felt so called to the water? How you were so completely and fundamentally different from your mother?”

At that, Hisako tried to sputter together a defense for her mother, but Kisame’s knowing look stopped her cold.

“Your surname isn’t Mutakami.” As if she knew what he was about to say, her hands flew to her ears and she shook her head in repeated denial, though she could clearly read his lips- “It’s Hoshigaki.”
