nextguardianCool, thanks.

I'll take a read through either tonight or tomorrow. Math has most of my attention atm.

Ah, Serving! lol, I figured you and Andr28a would have kittens over me pulling that. I haven't done a cliffhanger in so long. It used to be my signature XD

So, what's up tonight? And yay- more RQ fic!

YunieXTidusMy laptop is burning my lap! It's scorching. There's something wrong with the fan, I'm guessing. -_- I really don't have the money to replace it, much less the computer. xD

nextguardianYou might be able to get away with one of those cooling pads they sell for laptops. A cheaper alternative, anyway.

YunieXTidusThat's true. I had one of those, but it stopped working. That was about half a year ago. I guess it's time to get a new one. Sigh.

Anyway. How's the math coming?

(btw the drabbles are really short. One is less than 330 words, and the other is less than 1000.) Just in case you were worried about getting overly distracted.

nextguardianI hear you there, believe me --'

It's kicking my @$$, to be frank. THere are supposed to be three possible answers to this question. I've got two, but that last freakin' answer is killing me!

That I could probably handle. I'm almost ready to give up math for the night anyway.

YunieXTidusWhat sort of math are you doing? Is it regular college algebra? I might (probably not) be able to help you.

P.S. I think that's a fair call.

nextguardian on September 26, 2011, 2:55:39 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianIt's college algebra II. The problem is (one of them)

x^3+x^2=25x+25

Now, factoring that, you get:

x+5, x=-5

But there's a third answer in there somewhere. I can't find it.

It's driving me up the wall, I don't mind admitting. Math sucks.

Can you give me the whole problem as it's presented to you?

nextguardianIn this case, the origina problem is:

x^3+x^2=25x+25

I then factored out an x^2 from the left side and a 25 from the right:

x^2(x+1)=25(x+1)

I then divided by x+1 on both sides, leaving:
x^2=25

I looked for the square root of both, which let to:

x=5
or
x=-5

YunieXTidus on September 26, 2011, 3:14:31 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusThat seems right... What says that there's a 3rd answer?

nextguardian on September 26, 2011, 3:22:49 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianThe x^3 means it's a third degree equation, according to my professor and tutor. But I don't know where they're getting the third root (which turned out to be '1').

nextguardianIt's no big deal. Get well soon!

Same old, same old. I've got a question for you- would you mind if I changed your RQ to an Amy/Data or an Amy/Wesley, or hell, Amy/Riker? Or Amy/Picard? Any favorites among those?

YunieXTidus on September 21, 2011, 1:12:21 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD Amy/Picard. Rofl. He's old enough to be her grandfather. Hmm... I'd be interested to see an Amy/Data. Can I request them all? Except Picard.

x_X I totally forgot about your request. Once I'll get better I'll beat myself over the head until it's done! I am a terrible friend.

nextguardian on September 21, 2011, 1:16:20 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianHey, sure. It might take a while. But I think I can do an Amy/Data relatively quickly.

Hey, hey, no beating yourself up! It's no biggie.

Another question- is this too close to your scenario for Amy/O'Brien, when they get stuck on that planet? I've got Dax giving Holmes piloting lessons when the wormhole is assaulted through subspace. They investigate, and- well, I'll let you read it for yourself. I haven't added any detail yet. I focused on their conversation.

Even as he was saying this, Holmes had executed a perfect launch sequence. That was an interesting point, Dax though. As long as he was distracted, Holmes did fine. It was usually the opposite for most people. Being a scientist, Dax had to test her theory.

“Run any good programs lately?” she asked innocently, making some notes on her data padd.

Holmes shrugged, making the jump to full impulse seamlessly, his hands dancing over the controls.
“Nothing most people find interesting. Mostly I extrapolate data from interesting holonovels or textbooks and turn it into a training program. You know, like historical battles. Then I try to either match favorable results to map strategies, or in the case of bad results, to figure out where things went wrong.”

Dax smiled a bit. The kid was too serious.
“Don’t you ever run some…you know. ‘Adult’ programs? ‘Orion Slave Girl Harem’ or anything like that? Kurzon loved those…”

Holmes raised an eyebrow, moving the shuttle to warp two, setting a course away from Bajor.
“I’ve thought about it. For practice, you understand,” he interrupted himself, smirking a bit.

Dax nodded indulgently. She’d been a man herself once; she knew how it went.

“Is there any merit to that, do you think?” Dan asked idly, piloting without a second thought. “I mean, maybe I would learn to talk to girls that way?”

“Mmm. Pretty distracting when they’re in bikinis or less, each begging you to buy their freedom so they can serve you…A different program, maybe. Or…”

Dax leaned in close, as if whispering a jealously guarded secret.
“Or you could just ask a girl to a holosuite.”

Holmes turned an interesting shade of pink, momentarily forgetting what he was doing. This was it! He was going to ask Dax out! Right now.

Dax pointed at the view screen and shouted “Asteroid!”

Stifling a curse, Holmes navigated them away quickly, using a pretty nice bit of trick piloting to dodge the asteroid and get out of the cluster he had wandered in to.

Too much distraction isn’t good. I’ll have to be more careful, Dax noted, muttering reassuring words to Holmes, accepting partial blame for the situation But who knew? He’s actually a natural at this once you settle him down.

Back on Deep Space Nine, Commander Sisko was studying the latest reports from Starfleet Command in his office. On a slow day, Deep Space Nine ran itself. Outside of him needing to authorize funds and personnel, and occasionally direct them personally, Sisko could make a lot of plans. Mostly, he focused on Bajor. Both as their Emissary to the Prophets and as part of his duty as a Starfleet Commander, he wanted to see the planet join the Federation. Bajor didn’t have a lot to offer at the moment, but given their rich history and their resilience, he had high hopes for them. And the Federation could do much to aid their rebirth.

At the epicenter of his hope for Bajor was the wormhole. It was already bringing new races to Bajor, along with much needed commerce. With the Federation’s presence above it, the planet was safe from most other alien races that might prove hostile.

The red alert klaxon interrupted this line of peaceful thought. Sisko rose to his feet and strode purposefully out of his office.

“Report!” he called from the top of the small staircase that raised his office above the rest of Ops.

“Sir, something is damaging the wormhole! Some sort of subspace fluctuation!” Kira called, tapping furiously at her console. Being the Bajoran Liaison to the Federation, she had the unique standpoint of being part of both organizations. That changed her view on some things, but not on her home’s prosperity. If the wormhole fell…

“Contact Dax and Holmes. Have them head to the wormhole and begin an investigation.”
--

En route to the wormhole, Dax kept Dan talking. His piloting was great, and she was even getting a good conversation out of the elusive ensign. It seemed like he just needed an excuse to talk to her.

Ever since that incident, when we put the Trill in Holmes to say it…I wonder just how much of what he said as ‘Dan D’Gar’ was ‘Dan’? It’s not like him to blatantly hit on a girl like that…but at the same time, at that point the had the Trill more or less in sync with him…

“Approaching the wormhole,” Holmes called out. “Slowing to ¼ impulse power.”

Dax tapped at her console. “Adjusting course trajectory.”

Holmes glanced at the sensors, noting when the craft was in position. “Full stop…now.”

Dan sat back in his chair, exhaling heavily. It was only now that Dax noticed the sweat on his brow. She had to stifle a laugh at his expense. Instead, she chose to pat him reassuringly on the shoulder.

“You did well, Daniel. You can do this.”

Holmes gave a tired nod and smile. “Thanks. I really couldn’t have done it without you. In fact, I’d like to-”

Whatever it was he would have liked to do was put on hold as their runabout was rocked.

“No damage to hull. Looks like it was a warning shot…” Holmes noted. “Recommend we raise shields.”

Dax absently nodded, engrossed in the scientific readings. Her brows knitted together as she glared at the equipment.
“A subspace fracture…there’s a strong gravitational pull. That’s what’s ‘attacking’ the wormhole.”

Holmes looked over the data, transmitting a subspace message to Deep Space Nine with the data they’d collected so far.
“So we should seal the fracture…”

“Eventually. We should scan it, first. If this is an attack with malice by someone across space and time, we need to know the origin to stop it from happening again.”
Checking the data one more time, Dax decided to use a magneton scan. It was the most thorough scan available to them.

“Speaking tactically, we should keep the station apprised of our results. In case whatever it is turns out to be hostile,” Holmes intoned. Dax agreed, and Holmes continuously streamed their data to Deep Space Nine.

A sharp series of chirps alerted Dax and Holmes to the fact that something was wrong.

“The gravitational pull is getting stronger. The scan must have disrupted whatever is causing this somehow! We’ve got to get out of here or we’ll be sucked in!”

Holmes immediately got into the pilot’s seat.
“Engaging impulse engines. Full impulse…now.”

Dax shook her head. “No effect. And we can’t go to warp this close the wormhole…”

“Bypassing security overrides…and we’re at 110 percent of maximum recommended output.”

Dax shook her head again. “We’re still being pulled in.”

“115...120...125 percent of maximum. Any more and we’ll rip ourselves apart.”

“Transmit an SOS the station and launch a tracking buoy with a warning message, continuous broadcast, all frequencies. And then grab on to something. We’re going in!”

The anamoly was now visible, breaking the rules of space/time. It looked literally like a crack in the universe. A blank slit which shown against the star-strewn sky.

“Routing auxiliary and emergency power to life support, shields, deflector, and structural integrity. Inertial dampers still operating.”

Dan didn’t need to add ‘so far’.

YunieXTidusI really like this! No, I don't think it'll be too similar to my Amy/O'Brien situation. I was thinking they'd land without trouble, but the 'religious' side of the war they're in the middle of threw up some sort of defense net to prevent the other side from trying to get out into space. I haven't mapped it out in detail, but I was thinking something like that.

So this works. love it!

And no rush on doing all of them! xD One every now and then is more than enough to keep me happy. Just don't do an Amy/Picard. I cringe at the thought. I mean, he's good looking, for his age, but there are some lines even I don't cross. xD

nextguardianOh, okay. I didn't want to be stepping on your toes here. I originally planned to have Dax and Holmes wind up in the Delta Quadrant, meet up with Voyager and then...well, the ending will be the same, so I'm not going to give you a spoiler. I scrapped that because I found a better place for them to go... :) I'll give you a hint- it's along the line of their conversation earlier. The closest thing to a current day holodeck program for adult pleasure (not quite like it sounds, actually. lol).

I'm having a good time making the science apply. I had no idea what the hell a magneton scan was until I looked it up. From there, the storyline began to make more sense.

Cool. Okay, I can do that. Data will probably be up first, then. He's the most fascinating of that group.

YunieXTidusxD Nice. Using words you don't know, and THEN looking them up. ;) Nope, no toe-stepping.

Yes, he is. I love his view of the universe, and love to be more specific. I'll be interested to see how you portray him. Will this be before or after his emotion chip? Or maybe it could be overlapping? Like, he has to keep it out for whatever reason, and then later on he gets to use it again. I mean, no need to listen to me I'm just thinking aloud, as it were. xD

nextguardian on September 21, 2011, 1:42:08 PM

nextguardianlol, it worked out, though! I would have changed it if it didn't. And I'm glad there's no toe-stepping- I'm having fun with this storyline!

Lol, that's a good question. I think it'd be more interesting without the emotion chip, at least at first. It all depends on how inspired I am XD

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusYes! I love that episode. Wesley kind of comes into his own a little bit.

nextguardian on September 19, 2011, 1:24:05 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianHe finally grew a pair. I still hate him, but I think Beverely is now worse than he is. He's a kid, so he has an excuse. She's just a jerk.
Riker grew on me, though. Once they pulled the stick out of his @$$ and he relaxed a bit, he got better.
Just saw Micheal Dorn on 'Castle'. Man, he looks/sounds different!

YunieXTidus on September 19, 2011, 1:26:13 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD I loved Riker. He was such a ladies' man. Rofl, no kidding! It's amazing what Klingon forehead furrows (or lack thereof) can do to a person!

nextguardian on September 19, 2011, 1:31:54 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianHe got to be better. He was just so freakin' obnoxious and uptight at first!

He slimmed down a lot, too. Looks like he's got a good role.

YunieXTidus on September 19, 2011, 1:32:56 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusSo what are your plans for the evening?

nextguardian on September 19, 2011, 1:41:10 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianMath homework and Japanese studying. With an evening like that, I can't understand why I'm not getting laid!

How about you?

YunieXTidus on September 19, 2011, 1:42:37 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD A query to baffle even the most scholarly minds, for sure.

Reading the HP fic, that's pretty much it.

nextguardian on September 19, 2011, 1:52:15 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianlol, really! I've been so stressed even that doesn't seem to ripple my overhead --' I need a vacation and random, hot, guilt-free sex...which won't happen, because I'm a relationship type. Damn my genetics and manners!

If you've got time, I just updated 'Serving'. You and Andr28a are going to hate me for this chapter, I bet.

I'll take your word for it. Definitely not interested in ever experiencing that for myself. More power to people that do.

nextguardianI'm okay, thanks. Just finished up some math, so I'm taking a break before I tackle more. What's up with you tonight? Anything good?

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 1:11:03 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusI just downloaded a new book for my kindle. xD That's pretty much it. I'm gonna email you the first part of my Ken/Tommy one-shot. I haven't gotten much done, and there's no man on man action yet, so don't worry. xD But I just want to know if you think I'm portraying the characters properly.

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 1:19:05 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianHey, sure, I'll take a read through.
How do you like the Kindle? I've got a Sony EReader, myself. My only complaint is that it isn't backlit.

Rosenburg, Rosenburg...ah, that bonkers ambulance chaser! He could defend an innocent man all the way to death row!

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 1:23:26 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusIt's pretty simple. You go to the book you want on amazon (kindle edition) click purchase, and it automatically sends it to your kindle through a wireless thing called "whispernet." The kindle also does internet and games, although the games are stupid.

I like the kindle cause it looks just like a real book. Not backlit though. lol.

xD The british guy. Loved him.

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 1:33:00 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianSame thing with the EReader, more or less. I picked it because it looks like a data padd from Star Trek, if I'm honest.

He was hilarious!

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 1:35:12 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusLol nerrrrrrrrrd.

Even though the guy who wrote his script knows little to nothing about british dialogue. He wouldn't have referred to the "slut" as "mate."

"I've been looking for a bird like you for ages, mate."

"Don't you worry about a thing, mate."

Guys who are attracted to a woman don't refer to her as mate. Mate is used to refer to men, by men.

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 1:39:23 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianYep, and damned proud!

Thankfully, they knew something about comedy and/or toilet humor!

'mate' always struck me as a more Australian term, for some reason.

Love what you sent me! You've got their personalities down. Ken shrinking away from Tommy is perfect.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 1:44:19 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusNo reason not to be!

xD That they did.

Yeah, I can understand that. But in the area that the british guy's voice actor apparently comes from, they use mate a lot.

I'm glad to hear that. Now my problem is finding a problem that would be so urgent that Ken had to call Tommy out. You got any ideas?

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 1:47:11 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianDarn right! I'll wear my Spock ears with pride! XD

Ah, cool. Makes sense, then. Well, up until calling a girl that apparently :D

Geez, it's been a while since I played the story...If you need a generic problem, maybe have Tommy framed for some crime he didn't commit? Or (though it wouldn't be cannon) maybe Cortez decides he doesn't like the tought of Tommy and Mercedes together, so he puts a hit on Tommy?

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 1:49:01 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusI'm trying to stick more canon. I was thinking something that required Tommy to go out and kill people, or something. xD I'm using you as my idea vending machine.

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 1:59:10 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianOkay, let me see...How about this: Ken is freaking out because Tommy is being blackmailed by someone. So Tommy has to go and 'pay the man' (kill, in other words), and he think about the drug issue from the beginning, gets distracted, and gets shot himself, though he kills the other guy, too.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:00:21 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusThat's not bad, and it opens up the door for some Ken and Tommy bonding time.

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:05:06 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianI could see a touching hospital scene thing happening. Like you said, they have to be together. Usually, Tommy doesn't stick around Ken long, so this forces the issue a bit.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:09:03 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusHmm. That actually gives me a heading! I knew I was friends with you for a reason.

Anyway, how's your stories coming?

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:11:32 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianYay! I have a friend! Bonus points because you're female! lol.

Still stymied, for the most part. Did I ever share the second chapter of my Voyager story with you? If I did, I've since added more, if you're curious about it.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:13:33 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD Take points away 'cause we've never met, though.

You shared part of it, but I'd love to read more!

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:18:29 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianOkay, fair enough XD

Cool. I'll send that in a few mins. At the end of yet one more assignment that I freakin' bombed on the first time around.

I may also be updating 'serving' tonight. Hopefully, anyway.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:19:58 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusI'm not sure I'll be around long enough to read 'serving.' I'm fading fast, even though I want to write and read at the same time!

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:32:24 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianThat's okay. I'm not sure I'll update anyway. I did, however, send you Voyager. So if you're awake for that, I anxiously await your feedback! If not, it can wait :)

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:33:04 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD Your opening line. You shouldn't have said that....

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:40:20 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianI figured it was going to happen XD I mean, you picked up TommyXKen, for God's sake! Two good looking guys like Tom and Dan, or two buddies like Kim and Dan...I figured it would occur to you eventually.
Hopefully you'll like the rest of it, too XD

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:42:01 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusLol it wouldn't naturally occur to me, since Dan is an extension of you, and I wouldn't want to offend you. But you practically gift-wrapped the offer!

And in my defense, once you read the finished version of my ken/tommy fic, you won't be so hasty to deem it a crack pairing!

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:47:41 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianlol, I don't care if you write it, but don't share it online! lol, I don't want anyone thinking Dan has other teamly tendencies. I appreciate the respect towards him/me, big time! I just found it hilarious, for some reason.

I don't think it's a crack pairing, honestly. I can see where it would happen now that you've mentioned it. I just doubt most people would make the connection. At least, most males wouldn't.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:50:21 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusxD I could see BOTH of those pairings working out, although Dan/Kim would me so much more awkward cause Kim's such a sweetheart. xD Do you mind if I share it with you when I'm done, if I do decide to write such a fic?

You mean, most heterosexual males wouldn't. Gay men think just like me!

nextguardian on September 18, 2011, 2:54:45 PM

nextguardian on
nextguardianlol, sure. I'm sort of curious in a backwards way.
Not ever happening in real life, though. Ever.

lol, fair enough. I wouldn't know anything about that, so I'll take your word for it.

As for the rest of it, what do you think? I realize I haven't gotten to the 'point' of the episode yet, which comes soon.

YunieXTidus on September 18, 2011, 2:56:31 PM

YunieXTidus on
YunieXTidusOf course I love it! Also, I replied to the email directly.

So that isn't the finished chapter? (I'm posting the 'episodes' in 2 chapter bits.)
