well, in the cartoon he randomly kisses her for no apparent reason

well, if you read the first one, you find that he's an alien that controls the predasite animals and, like the original TMM, he falls in love with the main character.

BUT, unlike ichigo, Lucia isn't all girly girly, and in the sequel, when matt (his alien name is Toidi-'idiot' backwards) fist kisses her, she punches him in the face. ^^.

This is the overview of the chapter before last:

Mat walked to the plane, suitcase in his hand.
The rain fell from shy, heavy and cold. He did his coat up tighter and pulled his hat down further.
There was no point. She didn't love him. he had to take this job in Africa, to annoy the African mew mews.
"MATT!" screamed a voice.
Matt turned to see Lucia running towards him.
He dropped his case as she ran into his arms and threw hers around his neck.
"Don't do this, matt. I've come to my senses. i love you!" she screamed.
Matt blinked and felt her warm wet tears fall into his shoulder.
"Sorry, kid. i have to do this." he whispered, and pushed her gently away and walked onto the plane, leaving her standing alone in the rain.

Matt put his case in the luggage compartment and sat in his seat.
A new start. A new life. New teamamtes. New enemies.
Then the thought hit him.
"WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING ON THIS PLANE?! SHE LOVES ME!" he screamed, and pushed his way through the people coming towards him, out the plane, and ran towards Lucia.

Lucia sighed and turned. She would never see him again. Even if he was an alien, she had loved him.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and she turned to see Matt, standing there, just looking at her.
"Hi." she said.
"Hi." he replied.
He took of his hat with his free hand.
Then he turned her around and kissed her.
Lucia's tail and ears appeared and stood on end in pleasure.
When they finished, lucia did something she didn't do often.
She smiled. And laughed.
