Ryouko Kaguya was sitting in the ramen shop, mulling over two scrolls. The first was an old, tattered collection of jonin-level jutsus. The second scroll was his won, a white scroll, one that he guarded jealously.

Ryouko was referred to as “The jonin in genin’s clothing” because of his near-jonin abilities. But fate had kicked Ryouko squarely in the nuts. Ryouko was an average height, sinewy-muscular genin from the Leaf Village. An odd fellow, everyone agreed his skills were near jonin-level. But thanks to a certain council member (Ebisu) voting no for his promotion, in addition to the fact he didn’t have a team or a sensei, kept him from his rightful rank. Wearing all black, and even a Kakashi-ish mask, and a black bandanna-styled headband, he had bags under his eyes. Not as pronounced as Hayate Gekkou’s were, but noticeable.

Ryouko looked up from his scroll when he heard the sound of footsteps behind him. One set is male, the second…lighter, graceful…female. The chakra isn’t familiar, either. Maybe it was the fact that he only had D-ranked missions, or maybe it was because, after six hours of studying he’d had enough, Ryouko got up and tossed his ryo on the table. He went to leave, to go off by himself and train as usual, maybe see if Lee wanted a taijutsu-only sparring match, but something stopped him.

That chakra…it’s bothering me, somehow. There’s no battle, so why can I sense it so readily. Some kind of lasting jutsu or seal, maybe? But why would anyone have a need for that in a time of peace?

Ryouko turned around, making sure his mask was firmly in place. There he noticed an old friend, Kiba, standing with some girl he’d never seen before. His gut told him the chakra was hers.

Ryouko noticed the looks he got. The boy who could have been the pride of the Leaf, and the only one who could truly lay claim to be a loner. A favorite of the 3rd Hokage, and talented in his own right. He was the only genin to be in the ANBU interrogation corps. Maybe that was what compelled him to go and do something that was rare for him: associate with people.

“Afternoon, Kiba. And who’s this?” Ryouko asked in his strange, deep-but-raspy drawl.
